Flitter and Flutter with Felt

Let your imagination fly high with this DIY felt butterflies. We decided to make our butterflies with blue felt. Blue butterflies are thought to be a symbol of joy and luck – share some good fortune with your family and friends! Add them to a wreath or atop a present, or even turn them into charms for a baby mobile. These soft felt butterflies are fun for everyone. Print out our simple instructions and templates, and get crafting with our quick and easy-to-follow tutorial. Boundless butterfly bliss awaits you!

Tools & Materials

  • Scissors
  • Felting Needle
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Craft or Fabric Glue
  • Light Blue Roving Wool Felt (dark blue and medium blue)
  • 24 Gauge Wire
  • Light Blue Embroidery Floss
  • 1 White Flower Stamen (pip)


  1. Gather the tools and materials listed above.
  2. Cut the felt according to the template. Pin before cutting for a symmetrical butterfly.
  3. Cut all of the pieces and mark the holes for French knots, using the template as a visual guide.
  4. Sew French knots following the tutorial on the site.
  5. Glue medium blue pieces on top.
  6. Bend the wire into the approximate shape of wings and hot glue to the felt back.
  7. Using craft glue, attach the wing pieces on top and press together.
  8. Fold the pip in half and glue with hot glue.
  9. Needle felt the butterfly’s body (or cut from felt).
  10. Hot glue the body to the wings. Allow for it to dry and then bend the wings.
