We have been so enjoying creating projects for our nautical theme this summer! Today we are sharing the template and tutorial to make this adorable mermaid headband. This is one of those projects that would be the perfect activity for an afternoon crafting with your little ones. I can just see this mermaid headband being the main event for a little girl’s birthday party!
Start this felt project by downloading the PDF below. Cut out each shape as a guide for cutting your felt. This project includes templates for both starfish and seashell designs. Next, choose the colors of felt that you want for your headband. We used wool felt with a cornflower blue, coral, and peach color scheme, but you can personalize your project with any colors that you like! Cut out your felt according to the template, then pick out matching colors of embroidery floss. Before sewing the felt together, you should add the cute bead detailing. You can find seed beads in various colors at any local craft or jewelry store. Isolate one strand of embroidery floss and thread it through a thin needle. You can then sew the beads on in any way that you like. We also added a simple running stitch the our seashell to create realistic ridges. Easy!
Our mermaid headband features 5 felt sea creatures in total: 4 starfish and 1 seashell. Each creature has two layers of felt sewn together with embroidery floss. A basic blanket stitch is all you need! You can also follow our step-by-step photo tutorial below to help you through this craft. Once you have finished the sewing portion of this project, all you need to do to finish the headband is use some hot glue to attach the felt to a headband. We found a simple plastic headband at our nearest drugstore that was perfect for the job.
