Papercut Halloween House Lanterns
Paper houses and paper lanterns are two of our favorite ways to decorate for a new season or holiday. So we combined both ideas to create these Halloween house lanterns! We have Krista to thank for designing all of the intricate Halloween details. And because it is such a detailed project, we recommend cutting these paper lanterns with your cutting machine.
Of course we do have a printable template for you if cutting by hand. Just scroll down to download either the SVG cut file or template and start crafting!

Home is where the haunt is
These Halloween house lanterns are a simple and easy craft project with little construction required. All you need is one piece of paper for each house and vellum for the windows. In the past we have made Halloween houses and lanterns in black, so this time we switched it up with some alternative Halloween colors. (Plus we love any excuse to use our frosted paper!) You can craft your Halloween house lanterns out of text weight paper like we did or use cardstock paper.
Once you’re done crafting your Halloween house lanterns, pair them with a string of fairy lights or place an LED candle inside each house to create an eerie glow. You can also add a few mini pumpkins and some little 3D trees to complete your Halloween scene.
Instructions
Cut out the paper haunted houses according to the template, as well as the vellum windows, and fold along the score lines. Glue the vellum pieces to the inside of the house, covering the windows. Apply glue to the long side tab and attach the tab to the opposite side to secure the lantern closed.

I can’t figure out how to upload this project into my Circuit Design space as when I download the SVG file I don’t get a zip file, only a picture of the house.
I just checked the file and it looks good. I think you might be looking at the PDF? Go to your downloads folder on your computer and check for the zip file there. Double click to open and inside will be an SVG. This is what you will upload to the Cricut. Here is a video we made to show the steps. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/a-crafters-guide-to-the-cricut-maker/lessons/1-lia-griffith-files-for-the-cricut/
Thanks a lot
You are so welcome!
I only see the file for the house not the vellum windows. Help-
Thanks.
Hi Kathi, the vellum windows are there in the SVG in a layer behind the house. You can see them as a light grey.
I can’t figure out how to make the fold lines scored, instead of cut. Can someone help?
You have to change the lines to “SCORE” before cutting. This video should help! https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/how-to-use-files-cricut/
Looking for suggestions on how to cut the frosted paper. I am using the Cricut maker and I have tried several settings and they are all
tearing the detailed cuts in the windows, etc. I have tried both light cardstock and copy paper settings with different pressure settings to no avail it tears them. Thank you in advance for your helpfulness! I am a new subscriber and just love all the projects! Just a beautiful site!
Hi Karyn, sorry for the trouble! We have experienced this a lot with various brands of paper. Make sure you’re using a clean mat and a sharp blade. You can also try some test cuts using the cardstock setting if the light cardstock setting isn’t work.
Thank you for your response. I am new to the site and after posting this I thought to put it on the Facebook Group!
Solution I found today, in case it helps someone. I used the Strong Grip mat and used the Copy Paper setting with the
standard pressure setting. Worked greatI Thanks again, I’ll be posting a photo shortly in the FB Group!
Oh that’s so great you found a setting that works for you Karyn! Some things that work for us don’t always work for our members so we appreciate you sharing this on the Facebook group 🙂
I made this today! It came out super cute. 😊
Yay so glad to hear it!!
