Layered Watercolor Cherry Blossom Artwork
Cherry Blossom Chic
Something I’ve always admired about spring is the way that color seem to seep back into the landscape during the season. While we love exploring the stark loveliness of winter, something about the return of more delicate hues really gets our creative juices flowing. For instance, we’ve featured the beautiful cherry blossom in a few projects over the years. Still, we love how this Layered Watercolor Cherry Blossom Artwork showcases their sweet and simple silhouette. Much like our Layered Watercolor Hellebore, Acorn and Oak, and Mirabelle Plum projects, this craft is a great way to update your wall decor to align with the upcoming season.

Cherry Blossoms are such fascinating flowers. Their beauty captivates and draws admirers from all over the world. Native to Japan, cherry blossoms, or “sakura,” carry rich cultural significance. In Japan, because they bloom so briefly before retreating, cherry blossoms symbolize the fleeting nature of life and the impermanence of beauty.
Watercolor is the perfect medium to capture the soft, translucent petals of the cherry blossom and all their delicate beauty. With every brush stroke, you’re not only celebrating but participating in the historical link between nature and artistic expression! This Layered Watercolor Cherry Blossom Artwork is a lovely way to capture the essence of spring and fully engage with the joy of creation.
Once complete, hang it on your wall or lean it casually on your bookshelf for effortless spring decor. No matter how you choose to display your work, we can’t wait to see your Layered Watercolor Cherry Blossom Art pieces burst into bloom! Hi! I’m quite new to paper crafts. I am attempting the cherry blossoms (my 6th Lia Griffith project), and have a problem. My watercolor paper does not release cleanly from the standard grip mat. An entire layer of fiber stayed on the mat (effectively ruining the mat). I am using a 90lb water color paper I already had in my “hoard”. Any suggestions / possible causes? I don’t want to ruin any more mats!
You might be able to save your mat by soaking off the paper. The sticky should be water resistant. For the watercolor paper, try using an older mat with less sticky. You can tape the edges to keep it from moving.
Thank you! Washed it off and it’s back in service. After more experimenting, without complete success, I’ve decided to try a different watercolor paper. 🤞🏻
Another trick when using heavier paper on a less sticky mat is to tape the edges so it will not move while cutting. I do this with heavy crepe paper too. 🙂
winter berry branch
You have so many great ideas!
Citrus branches would be lovely- lemon and/or orange. Grapefruit
My favorite!
Icelandic poppy, classic rose, David Austen English rose, pine bough with pinecone…something Scandinavian like a lignon berry this should maybe be a never ending series!
Putting them on the list!
A strawberry plant would be fun- you have so many lovely strawberry plants. Raspberry /blackberry branch
Great idea.
I love these. I finally made mine. In addition to all of the lovely flowers and branches, I think it might be fun to alternate with some kind of woodland creatures- trout, bears, wolf- or some thing so that you could have a Father’s Day series as well.
Love it!
I think a tulip would be awesome.
I will let our Emily know! 🙂
Hi Emily
I have a question about the paper. I am pretty sure I am using a thicker watercolor paper then you used for this class, what setting on a Cricut Explorer would you recommend to cut through the paper? I loved this project so much its so not what I usually make. but not being an “artist” it was super easy to make it look like I was. Thank you so much.
I’m going to try red poppies for my friend! wish me luck !!!!! Lehann
Try using “poster board”. Maybe do a test first though? Good luck! I am sure it will be gorgeous.
What frames are you using?I believe they are from IKEA?
These are from Ikea, yes, but they are discontinued now. Sad. We have to find a new source.
love this! would like to make one but when i go to the free download the page is blank. can you help?
The video is free but the download is part of the membership. You can download all four for just $15! We need to feed Emily. 😉
Emily .. this was just such a gorgeous project! And I think easy enough for anyone to do.Thank
I agree! I love this set and am excited to see more.
The free download for this project shows as blank – no download.
I am logged in with general account.
Thank you.
So sorry, our mistake on that button. This is a free video to show techniques, but the templates for all four are part of the membership. You can download all four for a month membership too!
Hi the free down load doesn’t seem to be working.
love this project and so want to try it.
Thanks
Sorry about that! The video is a freebie and the templates are part of the membership. Totally worth one month membership. 🙂
I can not get the download for this
Can you help me?
If you are a member, it should be there for you now.
I’m having the same issue as Ms. Pattison. When I click “Enjoy your Freebie”, it sends me to the downloads page but there’s nothing there.
So sorry, that button was a mistake. The video is a freebie, and the templates for these four projects are part of the membership. $15 and you can get all four!
I’m signed in and am unable to view this video. Thought I would color now and let it dry overnight.
It usually takes an hour to load the live onto the site for replay. It is there now!
I can’t get the PDF to download that’s supposed to show all the pieces laid out separately so you know where to paint. Clicking the free download link for “Layered Watercolor Cherry Blossom Artwork” takes me to a page that just says “Download” but has no PDF and no links.
Hmm. I just checked it. Everything is in the one zipped folder that should be in your downloads once you click. Let me know if you sorted it. It might be a browser issue.
I have the same problem
Click refresh on the page.
Beautiful work
Thank you!
Emily, after coloring the petals with color pencils as you did, it gave a great dimension to the flowers. That was a great craft for gifting to someone. Well I had a question, the paper on which you stuck the stem and the flowers; was that plain cardstock, or water color paper. I’m sorry you may have mentioned it and I somehow missed it. Thanks.
This whole project is made with the watercolor paper. Both the layered art and the white backing paper. So happy to hear you loved this project!
Re Cherry Blossom art work. This item is showing me as a non-member.why?.
Oh, you should have full access! Double check that you are logged in first. If that doesn’t work, let me know and I will have Jefferson take a look at what is going on.
Filling in log in comes up completed, but when I press log in nothing happens
Try to refresh your page and see if that will help. It sounds like slow internet.
