Paper Lanterns for Valentine’s Day
Love Lanterns
Paper lanterns are one of our favorite things to make. And it seems like you all love to craft them, too! Today we’re showing you how to create these paper lanterns for Valentine’s Day.
If you love to decorate your home for the holiday, these lanterns would look lovely on a table or on your mantel. They would also make pretty table décor for your Galentine’s Day party, wedding, bridal shower, or another event where love is in the air!

Our paper lanterns for Valentine’s Day feature two designs: one with cut-out hearts and one that simply says “love.” For our lanterns, we chose two soft pink colors along with two neutral colors. You can find the exact colors linked below. Or you can use whatever colors you like best!
Another thing we always like to add to our paper lanterns is translucent vellum paper. We also sometimes add flameless tea lights to our lanterns. This makes them feel more like real lanterns and can give the room a soft, intimate glow. However, they look just as pretty without the tea lights—the choice is up to you!
When you’re ready to craft these paper lanterns for Valentine’s Day, we recommend using a cutting machine. This project will be much faster and simpler with a cutting machine. But you can also print our PDF template and cut these by hand.
If you have any questions, just let us know! We would love to see how you use these paper lanterns for Valentine’s Day. So remember to post pictures to our Facebook page for members! Or share pictures on your Instagram page with the hashtag #MadeWithLia.
How to Assemble
- Cut the “love” and 3D heart lanterns according to pattern. If using the SVG cut files, be sure to change the magenta lines to “SCORE”.
- Cut the vellum pieces according to template notes. Use an adhesive dot roller to adhere to the inside of the lantern.
- Fold the lanterns along each fold line, then add glue or adhesive along the long tab on the side. Press to secure closed.
- For the tops, cut from vellum and snip a small slit on each corner as indicated in pattern. Fold down, add dab of glue then overlap corners to create a “top”.

Thanks much for the instructions that were added, Lia! I truly appreciate it!
Hi Lia, I commented above regarding needing instructions for lanterns and you replied that there are none. I don’t know if others find these self explanatory but I could not figure out what to put together! I had my granddaughter over and we were stumped. The svg patterns have several square and rectangle shapes and then the LOVE and the HEARTS. I really don’t understand how it goes together to make the lantern box. We figured out the covers. I ended up just using the LOVE and HEARTS to make into a cylinder for some kind of “lantern” but I really would like to make the ones shown. I would love some directions if possible. I was so frustrated with this as I wanted to make the lanterns with my granddaughter.
We just added some instructions to the post, and updated the pattern and SVG file to clarify that those rectangles & squares are for the vellum pieces that go on the inside of the lantern.
Are there instructions on how to assemble these? I cannot seem to find any. Thank you!
Hi Coleen! There aren’t any detailed instructions for this project, you just cut & fold in then tape along the long side tab.
The love lanterns would look so good on bridal shower guest tables with a small, full flower arrangement! Such a great DIY. Thanks for sharing.
Ooh yes, very sweet!
I am also wondering about the score lines. I am using Silhouette Design Studio. I just tried mine and everything cut…I had no score lines. It is a lovely design and I am thinking it is something on my end that I am not cognizant in how to do. Thank you.
That is so weird! I’m not sure what the problem is since we don’t use the Silhouette in the office. Hopefully Silhouette’s customer service can help you (and do let us know if you find anything out about the way our files are set up for Silhouette!)
I worked around the problem and hand scored the lines for the folds. It does not come into Silhouette as layered. This is the first time that I have had to adjust, as usually things seem to be the same. Wondering if it has to do with the “layers”. Thank you for your response.
Possibly? I’ll look into this and see if there was a software update or something else causing the issue. If you experience this with other projects, please send us an email to hello@liagriffith.com.
Can you please tell me how to add score lines.
There are score lines in the file, you just need to change them to “SCORE” in Design Space. For more information, check out this post on using SVG files: https://liagriffith.com/how-to-use-svg-files-for-cricut/
Hello, the SVG for the paper lantern only downloads one file. Thank you
It’s working fine on my end and the 2 designs are showing. Did you upload it to Design Space?
