fji16103As we began to think of gift ideas for this holiday season, we tried to channel gifts that we remember loving to give or receive in the past. Last year, our illustrator Krista gave her mom a gorgeous recipe box from our friends at Rifle for her birthday. We loved the idea of giving a recipe box as a gift, so Krista decided to recreate her own design. Make one for your own kitchen, or give one to a loved one filled with some of your favorite recipes!

This project is great because it is extremely easy to put together. We started by buying a simple wooden recipe box from our local Michaels (link in Shop this Project). You can personalize the box by staining it or painting to match your kitchen’s color scheme. Get creative! Next, add the vinyl label – the design includes adorable vegetable illustrations with a pretty script font. Download the SVG version if you have a cutting machine, or use the PDF version if you are cutting by hand. We used Cricut’s brand of vinyl in Linen, but this is another opportunity to do some of your own personalizing. Choose any color of vinyl that appeals to you! If you are using the PDF version, print onto printable vinyl.

Cut out your label and stick it directly onto the wood. After doing this we sprayed a little bit of varnish over it to keep it in place and give it a nice sheen, but this is optional. We added a link to the spray that we used, but any varnish will work. Once you finish the recipe box you can start filling it will all of your favorite recipes! Print our matching recipe card templates from the download below. You can give blank recipe cards, or you can fill some in with your favorites. To edit the recipe cards, you will need to download and install the free font Slaberlin. When you are ready, print the recipe cards onto white cardstock. And now you have a beautiful DIY gift for any of the aspiring chefs in your life!

Head over to our recipe section to find inspiration for filling these recipe cards, including one of our favorite food gifts for the holidays: cowgirl bark.
