Macrame has become wildly popular in the last couple of years for its unique natural and artisanal aesthetic. Making macrame yourself provides so much freedom to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Recently we shared a tutorial for some beautiful macrame wall art designs that you can incorporate into your home or office decor. Here we bring you a tutorial for a simple DIY macrame necklace, perfect for pairing with all of your summer outfits!

Making Your Necklace

Our DIY macrame necklace uses a series of the most basic macrame knots — the square knot. To make this necklace, you will need a chain and jewelry findings. We found our copper chain at our local jewelry store and then used a lobster clasp with two jump rings. We used a copper keyring for our center, but feel free to choose another type of metal that better fits your style! While you are at your jewelry store, you can also pick out little beads to add into your macrame weaving. Just make sure that the beads are the same thickness as your string or the beads will slip off! The whiter material is cotton twine, and the off-white material is hemp cord. Once you have your materials ready, follow the step-by-step photo tutorial below to braid your DIY macrame necklace.

Can you tell me where you got the chain, hoop, rope and beads? I want it to look exactly like yours and not any different because I like it that much

  There is a link for the cord, but the other parts we picked up at a local bead store. This project is at least 7 years old, and we do list all of our sources now.

  Hi Linda, you can save the tutorial image by right-clicking and selecting “save as”, then printing the image from your desktop or a new browser window.

When looking for the ring, what is it called? In the photos it looks flat and I really like that, but I wasn’t able to find anything like that in the jewelry dept at Hobby Lobby. I also really like the copper sheen that yours seems to have. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello! Could you tell me the lenght of the macrame thread you used? I do not understand tutorial, is this 36inch (90cm) each part of these? I think this is too much… because i am beginner…

  We cut 6 36″ pieces. It does seem like a lot but you need a lot of cord for macrame because of the knots.

How did you get the end strands to fall so straight? I’m having a hard time…mine seem to be curving out to the sides and then they don’t line up at the bottom.

I really like this necklace! Could you tell me the width of the macrame thread you used? Because I only found 1 mm wide thread and I am wondering if it is not going to be too thin…

  I would recommend something a tad bit wider (ours was 1.5-2mm). It helps finding the beads first and then the twine to match after!

These remind me of the owl necklaces we used to make when we attached little twigs at the bottom

that made the owls look like they were perched on them. Very nice job!

  We picked up the copper ring at a local craft store (it’s actually a key ring, similar to this), and the copper beads came from a bead store but these are very similar. Have fun!

Why are the instructions one giant jpeg image? It is impossible to print out a picture that large? Can you post separate pictures of each step?

  Hi Nancy, we don’t actually format the photo tutorials to print. You can definitely print the Jpeg if you’d like to (select “fit to page” in the print dialog box). We provide separate downloadable written instructions for a lot projects, but the macrame is hard to put into written directions so we felt it best to leave this as a step-by-step photo!
