Become a MemberFor my friends Lauren and Nelson’s wedding a few weeks ago, we decided to make them a custom cake topper. One of their favorite things to say to each other is “love you more” which makes a perfect phrase to top their wedding day cake. You can see their cake below and how we decorated it with this gold sparkle cut out as well as two handmade wooden dachshunds. They are doxi lovers to the core, so this addition was a must. We decided to share this cake topper along with a few more popular options, “Mr & Mrs” and “Amore” along with an inspiration to use the paper crown from this post, so perfect for a princess party. All of these toppers were made with glitter card stock paper that you can purchase at Michaels or any other craft store. We used our Cricut Explore Air 2 to make the detailed cuts. At the end of the post you will find a download for the SVG cut files or the templates if you would like to cut them by hand. Either way, these cake topper will be a hit! Enjoy ~ Lia

What machine or printer do you use to do this
There’s a link in the post to the Cricut cutting machine we used to make these.
Where did you get the sticks that you used for the cake topper? Is there a link?
They’re just bamboo skewers and toothpicks 🙂
Hi,
can you tell me what font are you using please.
Thank you
I believe we used Asterism and Sant Elia.
Hi, is there a specific brand cardstock you use, because wouldn’t the glitter fall onto the cake?? I bought mine from michaels and the glitter does fall.
We’ve had good luck with Recollections glitter cardstock. There’s another brand that we’ve found at Michaels (I can’t remember the name!) that’s more of a shimmer that also works great, you might be able to find it searching the shelves there.
I have a vinyl cutter and I cannot find any assistance on how to cut a cake topper via yardstick. I need help.
Hi Candace! Unfortunately we’re not familiar with the machine or software you’re referring to. Can you contact the machine brand’s customer service for help?
Do you need a CO2 Laser cutter for these type of cake toppers? If not then what is the best cutter in the market for cutting good quality cake toppers.
There’s a link in the post to the Cricut Explore machine that we used to cut!
Do you know how big I should make a cake topper that has three layers and the top layer is 9 inches wide? The design is taller than it is wide
I think it’s personal preference, but I always like the look when it’s a couple inches smaller than the diameter. So maybe 6-7″ wide?
How do you attach the sticks to the topper?
Hot glue 🙂
Hi I was just wondering if you have experience sending a cake topper in the mail? I’m sending one to a friend but worried it might get damaged. Any tips on how to package this would be greatly appreciated!
We’ve sent quite a few delicate things in the mail and generally use a lot of chipboard, tape, bubble wrap and paper! For a flat cake topper I would use removable adhesive on the backside and tape it to chipboard, then add another piece on top. Secure with tape around the edges, and then send in a padded envelope or small box with bubble wrap and paper to protect it from moving around too much.
Hi. I want to make a 30th birthday cake topper for myself and some cupcake toppers. Do you have any printouts for a dirty thirty theme? Thanks.
Happy birthday! We have these birthday toppers: https://liagriffith.com/search/birthday, but nothing specifically for a 30th.
Hi there, I love your cake toppers! I am attempting to do something similar for a baby shower cake. I purchased a Cricut Explore Air 2 recently and want to get as much out of it as possible. What thickness of paper and cut settings do you recommend for something like this. I have been trying to cut a thick, cardboard like (very textured) piece of glitter card stock but can’t seem to get the cut to go the whole way through. Any recommendations would be wonderful!
Try a few test cuts first using a deep cut blade if you haven’t already, and push the setting to poster board or even custom. Another option is to cut two pieces of regular cardstock (one regular, one mirrored) then glue them together!
Oh my goodness too cute! I wish I saw your blog last year when I threw my aunt a surprise party 🙁
Can I ask how you made them so sturdy? And are you making them so the images are on both sides and how do you attach them? Sorry just LOVE these and would love to make on for my daughters birthday party, a cake topper that is. Thank you for this wonderful site
Thank you! I use glitter cardstock which is pretty sturdy on tis own. You could certainly cut a mirrored version of the design and adhere the two back to back, if you want!
Hi I was wondering how to make a welcome baby cake topper with my cricut
Hi! We have a baby cake topper (https://liagriffith.com/baby-shower-cake-toppers/) but if you’re looking to design your own, check out Cricut’s youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/officialcricut)
I love this!
What technique did you use for the icing on the cake ?
Hi Chelsea, I’m glad you like this! The first few cake photos are of our prop cake that has fondant. The last photo was the bride & groom’s real cake at their wedding so I’m not sure what technique that is. It’s beautiful though!
These are beautiful! Curious where you found the dogs?
The bride found a silhouette of a dachshund online, then traced and cut it out of balsa wood! So cute.
Hi-
Just wondering if we should be concerned about the food safety of these glittered cake toppers? Is there any food safe sealer to prevent glitters from falling?
Btw LOVE your website! Beautiful designs. ?
If you’re concerned about glitter flaking off, there is glitzy/shimmer paper at Michael’s where the glitter doesn’t brush off because it is pressed into the paper.
Hello!
What do you do to make them sturdy? I would like to use the MR and MRS but with white cardstock and it seems flimsy. What am I doing wrong? Please help! Thank you!!!
Hi! I look for thicker cardstock sold in single sheets at Michaels and Jo-Ann stores, but have also made my own duplex paper (spray adhesive between two sheets of regular cardstock, voila!)
HI Lia,
I am just trying to figure out the best size to cut the “Love You More” topper for my cake…we’re between an 8 and 10″ round. Do you remember what size topper your friends had!? Thank you so much!
-Meredith
I believe hers was around 7-8″ wide which was nice for a smaller top tier. I would think that size should work nicely for your size cake, as long as the topper is not as wide as the cake 🙂
Hello! Love these designs. Just wondering if you have something exactly like these but for twenty firsts. Thank you! xx
Not yet, but that is a great idea.
I’ve downloaded the cake toppers but no images appear. Am I doing something wrong?
Did you download the PDF or SVG? The latter is for cutting machines so you will be able to open them without that software. The PDF should open up once you download onto your computer. Sometimes if you try to see things in the browser window they are not always accurate. Does this help?
Is there a link to download the crown as well? I LOVE it, great work!
Have you seen this https://liagriffith.com/paper-crowns-for-all-of-the-paper-queens/
What did you use to put the topper on the cake? Was it a skewer or something like that? So CUTE
Yes, a skewer:-)
Good morning, I am new to using my Cricut Explore and I can’t seem to figure out how to upload the MrMrs topper after I’ve downloaded it. I have it saved as an SVG file but it is grayed out and I can’t select it to upload. Any tips? Thank you so much!!
You will need to use my SVG version not the PDF. You should be able to just upload it as a vector file and it will be ready to cut right there. Give it a try and see if that works for you.
Thanks for sharing all your beautiful designs! Quick question, have you done a tutorial on the paper flower shown on the Amore cake? Thanks again!
Yes, it is the Peony https://liagriffith.com/diy-crepe-paper-peonies/
Hi Lia, if you don’t mind me asking, what kind of glitter paper do you use for this type of project? And where can I buy it from?
Thank You.
I bought mine at Michaels.
When you cut that thick glittery/messy paper, on what material setting do you put your cricut explore dial? I’d like to try these, but I don’t want to mess up my blade or mat!
The Explore cuts this kind of paper beautifully. I set it on a heavy card stock with a regular blade. I use the light grip mat too. I have cut a lot of glitter paper with this machine. 😉
Hi! I love this blog
I want to start selling some of these topper in my country but not that tipografias use because I need them in Spanish, so I want to make my own topper but can you help me with the name of some typefaces?
thanks, greetings from Venezuela
Hi Cynthia, they are hand illustrated but there are some really pretty typefaces out there:)
Did you do only one cut of the cake toppers? Debating if I need a few layers for sturdiness or not… Thanks for this!
Hi Valerie, I did just cut one layer of the card toppers, I guess it depends on how thick your paper is. Mine held up really well at Lauren’s and Nelson’s wedding.
Thank you so much 🙂 I had the feeling but I needed the rational arguments. Your article confirms it.
Happy to help! Enjoy your new Cricut Explorer, makes life so much easier:)
just gorgeous, thank you for the sharing Lia.
and as well the tute.
sooo pretty and stylish, well done;-D
Have a nice weekend;-D
Thanks Jet!
Love, love, love your ideas for these cakes. They look whimsically stunning!
Whimsically is one of my favorite words;) Thank you! Have to say I also think they are pretty stunning, considering throwing myself a princess party with the crown topper so that I can show them off;-)
Lia, I am trying to make a decision whether to buy the Cricut Explore or the Silhouette Cameo. For some reason I am drawn to the Cricut and seeing you design all kind of custom stuff with it I was wondering what software do you use. Do you make your design in Illustrator and save them as SVG then simply cut with your machine?
Thanks. I really love your designs.
Hi, I have used both Cricut Explore and Silhouette and hands down love the Cricut Explore. I use it for all of my projects which are designed in Illustrator and then saved as SVG files. I actually have an entire post about why I love my Cricut https://liagriffith.com/why-i-gave-away-my-silhouette-and-replaced-it-with-cricut-explore/
You can get more information about the Cricut Explorer by clicking on the Cricut ad on my site.
Have fun!
