Makeup After 50A Fresh Makeup Tutorial for Women Over 50

Last year I turned 50, and so far it has been fabulously freeing. As each year passes, I feel like I grow into the truest version of myself, and with that comes that feeling of empowerment that every woman deserves. I was recently catching up with my talented friend Kristen Arnett, who is an incredible makeup artist and natural beauty expert. Her business, Green Beauty Team, is all about using non-toxic products to emphasize how skin health goes hand-in-hand with beauty. And this can be especially important for women over 50! We decided to pair up to create this video full of tips for makeup after 50 for creating a fresh look. As you can tell, we had a blast filming this video together, and we hope you can find some of these tips helpful for your own beauty routine!

Our Top Makeup After 50 Tips

The whole look should take about 15 minutes in total. Here are some of the main highlights from the video:

  • Make sure that your foundation isn’t too light in color; you can run the risk of yourself look ghostly, something we certainly don’t want for any makeup after 50.
  • You can apply foundation with a brush or your fingers so the product can almost melt into your skin. Just be sure not to wipe the makeup away! Use light pressure to spread the foundation evenly, and apply a bit of foundation to your neck for consistency in color.
  • Add a bit of concealer to your eyelids to even out redness or veins. This creates a nice base for your eye shadow color to look more natural. It can also make you look brighter and more awake!
  • Kristen recommends using a color that matches your flesh tone for the first layer of eye shadow. The whole purpose of this look is to complement and highlight your natural beauty. Use tones that might naturally exist on your face, then add subtle pops of color from there.
  • When applying eye shadow to the crease of your eye, sweep it up and in toward the center of your face in a soft windshield wiper motion. Avoid brushing the eye shadow on a downward stroke. This will add definition to your eye without pulling the eyes down. In the end, you want to make it look like a natural shadow on your face, which is why we used a mid-tone grey color.
  • Sweep a line of eye shadow over and slightly above your eyeliner line. This will blend and buff the eyeliner to make it a bit less stark and more natural looking.
  • Instead of eyeliner, you can use the same eyeshadow color under the eyes. Add a subtle line and then blend it with your finger. Generally Kristen recommends that the colors for the lower lash line should be 2 shades lighter than on your upper lash line.
  • Emphasize the arch of your brow to create lift on the eye.
  • Don’t put a lot of mascara under the eyes; simply touch the wand to the lashes after finishing your upper eyelashes.
  • If you are feeling adventurous, you can use your brow pencil under the center of the eyes.
  • Add concealer after finishing eye makeup to clean up any fall-out.
  • If you are using bronzer, apply it to the cheeks, hairline and under the chin.
  • Use cream blush on the apples of cheeks. You can then use the same color for your lips!
  • Darker color lipsticks can make your lips look smaller. Find something that’s a bit more lively, and apply some lip liner slightly outside your lip line to round everything out.
