Last year I turned 50, and so far it has been fabulously freeing. As each year passes, I feel like I grow into the truest version of myself, and with that comes that feeling of empowerment that every woman deserves. I was recently catching up with my talented friend Kristen Arnett, who is an incredible makeup artist and natural beauty expert. Her business, Green Beauty Team, is all about using non-toxic products to emphasize how skin health goes hand-in-hand with beauty. And this can be especially important for women over 50! We decided to pair up to create this video full of tips for makeup after 50 for creating a fresh look. As you can tell, we had a blast filming this video together, and we hope you can find some of these tips helpful for your own beauty routine!
Our Top Makeup After 50 Tips
The whole look should take about 15 minutes in total. Here are some of the main highlights from the video:
- Make sure that your foundation isn’t too light in color; you can run the risk of yourself look ghostly, something we certainly don’t want for any makeup after 50.
- You can apply foundation with a brush or your fingers so the product can almost melt into your skin. Just be sure not to wipe the makeup away! Use light pressure to spread the foundation evenly, and apply a bit of foundation to your neck for consistency in color.
- Add a bit of concealer to your eyelids to even out redness or veins. This creates a nice base for your eye shadow color to look more natural. It can also make you look brighter and more awake!
- Kristen recommends using a color that matches your flesh tone for the first layer of eye shadow. The whole purpose of this look is to complement and highlight your natural beauty. Use tones that might naturally exist on your face, then add subtle pops of color from there.
- When applying eye shadow to the crease of your eye, sweep it up and in toward the center of your face in a soft windshield wiper motion. Avoid brushing the eye shadow on a downward stroke. This will add definition to your eye without pulling the eyes down. In the end, you want to make it look like a natural shadow on your face, which is why we used a mid-tone grey color.
- Sweep a line of eye shadow over and slightly above your eyeliner line. This will blend and buff the eyeliner to make it a bit less stark and more natural looking.
- Instead of eyeliner, you can use the same eyeshadow color under the eyes. Add a subtle line and then blend it with your finger. Generally Kristen recommends that the colors for the lower lash line should be 2 shades lighter than on your upper lash line.
- Emphasize the arch of your brow to create lift on the eye.
- Don’t put a lot of mascara under the eyes; simply touch the wand to the lashes after finishing your upper eyelashes.
- If you are feeling adventurous, you can use your brow pencil under the center of the eyes.
- Add concealer after finishing eye makeup to clean up any fall-out.
- If you are using bronzer, apply it to the cheeks, hairline and under the chin.
- Use cream blush on the apples of cheeks. You can then use the same color for your lips!
- Darker color lipsticks can make your lips look smaller. Find something that’s a bit more lively, and apply some lip liner slightly outside your lip line to round everything out.

This is my first time seeing you- love this video. I’ve been doing it all wrong- lol-using sparkle to brighten, contouring, black and white. Loved your before and after. My 53rd birthday this month so I am purchasing from this line to treat myself and give it a try.
Would love to see you both do more of these videos such as the 5 min version she talked about, a look for date night, tool review (best brushes, which brushes to use, how to use, etc), how to choose the right colors (foundation, eye, cheek, bronzer) for your skin tone and eyebrows-what shape , how to shape, applying brow makeup.
Now off to check out your craft videos😊
Please a tutorial por women beginning the 30s!
Lia you are absolutely beautiful! Naturally! Thank you for the inspiration to remain natural, beautiful and youthful. A great reminder that over 50 is still fabulous!
Thank you Mary, that truly means so much to me!
Hi Lia, I loved your make up tutorial. Getting a daily make up look right for a professional 48 year old is difficult. Your video and Kirsten’s common sense approach was great. I went straight to the bathroom for a trial run – my hair is a medium brown and I have an olive complexion so the grey eye shadow didn’t really work for me . Would love to know what colour Kirsten would recommend for my colouring. The other plus from your video was it resulted in a cleansing of my bathroom/makeup cupboard. It was actually shocking to realise how much unnecessary make up I had accumulated.
Thanks again.
Love your tips and the way you did Lia’s makeup. It looks fantastic. I’m 57 years old and definitely need this ideas and any tips you have to offer.
Thank you very much!
Thank you Donna!
Well, this is my first time watching your videos and the first time at your blog and you are absolutely darling. I’m your age as well and you look great. The makeup artist was a bit harsh at times in my opinion (“you can’t get away with just mascara and lip balm anymore”) and a few other quips had me going “ouch…” but the content was otherwise excellent. Thank you!
Thank you Tina, that means so much to me. Kristen and I are good friends so I know she means well 🙂
This is a lovely video for make for over 50. I really enjoyed it. I was trying to send it to my self and I pressed the flag button I’m sorry! It’s lovely xxx
Blessings Clare
No worries, thanks for the heads up! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video 🙂
This a one of my favourite videos! And I watch quite a few. I would love to see one on the eye with bags underneath (yes me). Please!
Lia, I stumbled upon your site today looking for cricut paper flower files (found them, love them). I really love this video of you two demonstrating the makeup.
Thanks so much! I’m so glad you found us 🙂
I just found this video, and so helpful! I don’t wear a lot but when I do it was wonderful. Thanks you!!

I really enjoyed your video Lia! It was not only educational but entertaining–you were both so fun and so natural to watch. I am 70 but still looking for ways to improve myself and I certainly learned a lot from this and would love to see more. You are such a sweet person and so beautiful too! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Shirley, that means a lot! It was fun filming with her 🙂
Her choice of colors, and her highlight/shaping for your face was *perfect*. And your skin is beautiful. You look radiant. Thanks for posting this. Inspiring.

You’re so welcome! I really enjoyed it 🙂
OMG! Loved this video. I have always been one for the natural look but now, being 52, I scream when I look in the mirror. This was a great tutorial.
Thanks Marie. I love the idea of staying natural and fresh looking no matter what age.
Lia you look beautiful so natural. This video was great because as happy as I am that I made the switch to clean makeup, many brands tend to use younger women and those of us 50 and up I’m 53 need a few special tips and ticks
So good to hear! We wanted to keep it REAL. 😉
What’s great video and such fantastic tips .Kristen is amazing
I will tell her you said so. 😉
Hi Lia,
I loved the video and makeup tutorial. Just turned 45 and was unsure what is the best look and products for my age (still remember the makeup lessons from when I was a teenager, and not interested in going into a department store to be overdone and given a hard sell on products I don’t want). I have been using ‘green’ makeup and skin care for the past 10 years, great to see more options becoming available.
Congratulations on your fantastic website and I love making paper flowers. They are my favourite gift to make for family & family. I live in Tasmania, Australia, so let me know if you start posting your new paper line overseas.
Cheers Susan
Thanks Susan! I love hearing your experience. We are working on getting our paper and other goodies international. I see it happening. 😉
Your new look is beautiful! Thank you for sharing it with us. It would be really helpful for a list of products and colors she used on your makeover AND where those wonderful brushes can be found.
Yes! Kristin will provide a list for you and I will post that link as soon as it is up. I LOVE the products and brushes.
I LOVED IT!!! Kristen is ah-mazing!! I have never worn a lot of makeup, but have always needed a touch, especially my thin eyebrows and almost non-existent lashes. At age 60, I have nearly perfect skin, far more than I’ve ever had in my life. Twenty years of using totally natural and non-toxic products made my skin come alive! Should you need another video to do …..makeup for the 60’s would be lovely. This taught me a lot, even tho I am over 50. I will implement some of this first thing in the morning…..Thank you again!!!!! (And Lia, you are so lovely!)
So good to hear Barbara! We are finding that some of her tips are great for even the 20 somethings we do want that natural look. I agree that a video for 60+ is a good plan.
Please do it for those of us who have recently let our hair go gray. My coloring was very similar to Lia’s just a few years ago, but now I am silver and need to know what to do. Hi, to Arline from Donna in Walla Walla!
Arline says hello back! I like your thinking about ideas for women with gray hair.
Loved this. Thank you for sharing. I actually learned some good techniques with the eyes!
Yay! So good to hear.
I’m well over 50 and love the tips for natural makeup application for a mature face! What were the precision cotton swabs Kristen recommended?
Kristen gave me so many good ideas. It took me a few times watching to remember to try them all on my own. The cotton swabs are Japanese and I found some on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-Craft-Cotton-Xsmall-TAM87103/dp/B0026IBC2O
