Upcycled Brown Paper Bag Mini Baskets
From Old Bag to Little Beauty
I love having quick, craft projects – things I can create in less than 30 minutes, and better yet, if they use recycled materials. Today, let's make a cute one-piece upcycled brown paper bag mini basket that is finished and personalized with delicate cherry blossoms. I will show you just how easy it is to draw them onto your basket with paint markers.

To follow this month's theme of celebrating women, sisterhood, and the feminine, I incorporated the cherry blossom symbol onto these mini baskets. Like cherry blossoms, women continuously reclaim space, bloom in their strength, and inspire future generations to grow beyond limitations. What a beautiful symbolism to add to this mini basket.
Steps to make the basket base
Let's dive into the project! To start, I took a humble brown paper grocery bag and gave it a new life.
- First, I carefully opened the bag, removed the bottom and handles, and flattened it.
- To add some sturdiness, I folded the bag in half and used a hot, dry iron and a fusible web to laminate the two layers together. This creates a thick, sturdy material that is perfect for our basket.
- I then cut down the paper to 12 inches wide and with my longer (24-inch mat) used my Cricut and the heavy cardstock setting to cut out the basket shape. However, don't worry if you don't have a cutting machine! You can easily cut the template by hand using scissors or a craft knife. I've made the basket template available in both the SVG and the PDF for you to download.
- You can resize the template to match the size of your material. You can also use cardstock paper if you want to make small matching baskets for table place settings or party favors.
Let's add some decoration!
Now for the fun part! I used a set of Ohuhu paint markers to add delicate cherry blossom flowers to the mini basket. Here is a quick video of how I made the simple branch design. You can add cherry blossom branches to your baskets or create your own design.

Am about to attempt this…I think the design is adorable! Where is the video about making the cherry blossom branches? Am I missing something/ Thanks so very much.
Kathy
Wonderful! It is a fun one. Are you referring to the drawing of the cherry blossom branches on the basket? If so, there is a little video in this post on how I did those. If you are referring to the crepe paper cherry blossoms, here is the project: https://liagriffith.com/crepe-paper-cherry-blossom-branches/
Make sure you click on the monthly collection and you can see all of them together. It looks so pretty. 🙂
Hi! I love these. What a great idea. I tried cutting one out on card stock last night, but did have a little bit of trouble putting it together. I noted that you talked about a 24 inch mat but you also talked about how resizing The item as well. I used card stock cut it out on a 12 x 12 Size mat. The image I uploaded had what look like some extra “cuts“ at the bottom of the image on either side. Can you help me out? I sometimes have “reading comprehension“ issues. I also watched your video too, and it looked like the item slid together easily, and looked neat and tidy. I also didn’t know if maybe because the item is made of card stock it won’t have as much give to it. Thanks again for your time! I love your website and I look forward every month to seeing what new things you and your team create
Yes! Those extra little cuts. You can attach them with the main layer (use attach in the layers menu in design space), so they will stay in place and cut the base edges. This also creates a little foot so they sit up nicely. Go ahead and trim the ones you made with scissors, though. Let me know if this all works for you.
Thank you -I followed your instructions and attached the cuts. I was able to construct basket pretty much on the first try!
did have a little issue with some creasing when inserting the second handle, but believe I can overcome this issue with a little practice and maybe a review of your video. I am sure that if I was using your paper bag material, I would not have issues with creasing.
Oh good! I made all of my prototypes from regular cardstock and was able to slide the handle in without crease, but you almost have to curve those handle panels into an S to position them to slide through the slots without creasing.
These are wonderful. The first download size works, however the second download, labeled “free download”, does not work. Just a fyi. What a great way to repurpose those brown grocery bags!
Thanks for pointing that out! The second button was an error. 🙂
I think I have a thing for brown paper bags. I just love the texture. lol
