This peony has been a favorite in the long-running second edition of our crepe paper flowers master class (now in our master class archive) and is one of the featured flowers in our new book, Paper Flower Garden.

Did you know it took over 500 crosses every year over 8 years to create this hybrid flower? Luckily with our tutorial you won't have to try that many times to make this crepe paper Claire de Lune peony! However, making a flower over and over definitely helps you fine-tune your skills, and you most likely will want to make more than one peony to enjoy.
Although you could make this flower any time of the year, the Claire de Lune is one of the first peonies to bloom in the spring. Like most peonies, they are large in size. And this particular peony has cream-colored, crinkled petals and a fluffy center with golden-yellow stamens. Our tutorial for this crepe paper Claire de Lune peony, will show you how to achieve these characteristics and make your flowers look more realistic.

Skill level: Intermediate (lots of fringing by hand!)
Crafting tip: You must fringe the center by hand due to needing to stretch the cut piece of crepe paper before fringing.
How to Make a Crepe Paper Claire de Lune Peony
- Gather your craft tools and materials. Then download the flower pattern below.
- Cut crepe paper according to template notes, using either your scissors or a cutting machine.
- Use hot glue to attach a 3-inch 24-gauge wire to three 12mm cotton spun eggs.
- Color the bottom two thirds of each pistil using the green tea colored marker.

When I upload the svg file in design space, there are 3 petals that are horizontal at the bottom. I didn’t notice them until I cut them out and the grain was incorrect on those petals. I do not know how to fix this. Please help. Thanks
Hi Carrie. You will need to attach the groups to keep them from moving around the mat and rotating. Otherwise, the software changes the files.

There seems to be something wrong with the SVG download. Only part of the flower comes through.
Hi Kathleen, I just double-checked the file and I am seeing all of the pieces in Design Space. Try using the MINUS tool to shrink the space so you can see the complete set. Let me know if that works or if we need to do some troubleshooting.
Thank you. I realized on my computer it’s not complete but when downloaded into design space it’s all there. This has all been quite a learning curve for me but it has been well worth the effort. I’m so glad I found your wonderful site!

Hi Lia, so sorry . I realize now that the info i was missing is in the template. Because I do not cut by hand i thought the templates were only for cutting patterns.
Hi Nancy! Yes, I talk about how I love to print the templates and put them into my binder for reference. I use them all the time that way. 😉
Additionally, my point is when I go to cut the design, with circuit it’s not clear which crepe to use. Cricut shows a color but not what crepe to use.
Hi Nancy. Have you taken the crepe paper flower master class vol. 2 that is running right now? This is a great way to dig a bit deeper in which crepe papers to use and I actually did create this peony as part of the set.
Please…. can you include what part of the flower for each crepe paper in the materials list? It would make it so much more user friendly. I struggle with this consistently.
Hi Nancy! The colors for each part are noted on the flower template.
I paired 3 of these with the Japanese anemones and the hypericum berries from the January master class. My new favorite bouquet!

Hi. Fringe Scissors are also required and not listed. Also, how much of each paper is required?
Hi Jocelyn. We do not use fringe scissors for our flowers, but the small detail scissors and fringe by hand. You will get at least one flower (possibly more) per fold of crepe paper. Each package has a different amount of folds.
Love the peony! Hi Lia and team! Looking forward to crepeing more flowers! I have been out of the loop a couple of months so when I saw pinking the edges of the stamin . and the pan pastel .. I assumed lol that I was to pink at the end of the stamin lolol. I thought I better ask before assuming a second time … on the extra-fine coral stamin, there is no quantity mentioned on the pdf file. I want to assume 2 per flower.
P.S. I love Art Glitter glue too!!! Thank you for all you do ………

Hi Lia, I don’t think this file is correct just yet. There is still 18 petals like above comment and the coral crepe stamin isn’t there. I can’t wait to make them either! Love Peonies!

Cricut forced an update just before I uploaded the SVG for the Claire De Lune Peony. The size was correct at 28 x 30 but a number of pieces were stacked on top of each other and the grain lines were not attached. Some of the petals are organized to maximize paper, others are not. The numbers are also confusing. There are 4 Large stamens, 2 per bloom, so I expected petals 2 x (7 Large +6 Small,) totaling 26 for 2 blooms. There are 18 petals in the SVG file. This one needs another look. Thanks again.
Thank you for your feedback! We are trying out a new way of organizing our SVG files to help our members maximize their crepe paper and to help with any auto resizing issues in design space. The pieces that are not organized to optimize crepe paper are single pieces for the flower. We have done this so that you are able to cut a single piece if needed. We have fixed the stacking issue so hopefully that makes it a bit easier to understand. 🙂
Cricut says image to large? On template it says to size 28 x 30. I’m confused!
When first uploading the template before you ungroup anything double check that the box (with all of the elements inside) measures correctly, for this project 28×30. You can then ungroup and hide the box with the disclaimer before cutting.
I think in the supply list you forgot coral crepe for the stamen. It is in the PDF file list and instructions. Can’t wait to make this PEONY!
