Crepe Paper Chrysanthemum – Member Make Workshop
Crepe Paper Chrysanthemum – Member Make Workshop
Ready for our live workshop? For this month’s Member Make, Meagan is showing us how to make a crepe paper chrysanthemum. This flower has more petals than a ranunculus (130 total to be exact), so it will require some patience to shape and place all of them. But we think it’s worth it for this bright and fluffy flower!
As always, we’ll walk you through all of the steps and share our tips for making this crepe paper chrysanthemum. Just gather your supplies from the list below and join us live here on the 17th.
This video is for members only.

Become a MemberA mum-believable bloom
Mums are one of our favorite flowers to make over and over again. We have crafted different varieties out of frosted paper, crepe paper, and felt. But it’s been a few years since we made a crepe paper chrysanthemum. And since we’re always refining our techniques, this version will be our most realistic one yet! It’s also more of an intermediate flower than the previous mums we have crafted.
Since this is a bigger bloom, we recommend using heavy crepe paper. We have linked the colors we used below, but you can always use what you prefer. We can’t wait to see the crepe paper chrysanthemum flowers you make, so be sure to post photos on our Facebook page for members or on Instagram with the hashtag #MemberMake.
Crafting tip: Use the steel ball shaping tool to gently shape each petal.

Thanks so much! I appreciate your help with this beautiful project!
Anytime and always. 😉
Hello…I am using your heavy crepe English Garden size 9.8 inch paper. The SVG file insists on cutting approximately 10 petals horizontally when selecting the 8.25 x 10 inch setting. When I move the petals to another sheet in order to cut out vertically, I cannot turn the petals. Now I am short petals. Do you have a suggestion?
I have some great suggestions 🙂 In design space before moving onto the cut page select the group with all petals and the round center piece. Then select attach in the bottom right corner of the window. This will hold all of the petals in place how we have arrange them, stop them from rotating, and use the crepe paper most efficiently. You will want to do this with the group of leaves and sepals as well. You can then move onto cutting. There is no need to change the material size, you can leave it at 12×12. I hope this solves you problem! If you haven’t taken our “Crafters Guide to the Cricut Maker” Skills course I would highly recommend it 🙂 https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/a-crafters-guide-to-the-cricut-maker/
I’m loving this flower but I would love a smaller sized curling tool. I have small hands and this is one is kind of awkward on my hand.
A new small one is coming!! 😉
Lia and team, THANKS for these beautiful Member Makes. I just became a member today, 11/14/22. I am so pleased for the 20% discount that is offered for November 2022. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you all!
Welcome! Hope to see you on Friday at our Member Make where we are creating a mini tree!
Hi! Can the SVG be altered to accomodate the 8.25×10 material size in design space? I am using your heavy paper. In order to not waste, I selected this size but unfortunately some of the petals would cut horizontally against the grain. Now I need to count what I have and prepare a special mat for the missing horizontal petals I hid. Thanks!
Hi Pilar. We design the templates to use the most crepe paper in the most space-effective way possible. If you are using a smaller piece of paper, perhaps you can cover the width of the mat with two smaller pieces so that you can get the full cut.
Is the cut area as mentioned in your comments the same for all flowers or just this one? No wonder, I have had Cricut cutting problems! I have been selecting flowers that are easy to cut by hand to avoid the Cricut.
Thanks you.
Yes, this is something where we try to do a good workaround for all of the flowers. Sometimes Cricut can be challenging.
Sorry I can’t find the video
Sorry! It is there now.
Sorry I missed the live and I can’t get to the video link to replay. Thanks In advance for your help.
It is there now!
Hi Lia l was a bit late in watching this months member make. I heard the comment about different colouring methods. I have watched a few videos on this and they have used different teas, and vegetable die to make different colours. Thought it might be something to investigate?
Just a thought.
Thanks, Tracey! If you have any favorite video links, send them over to hello@liagriffith.com and Emily will forward those to me.
I see many comments about the Cricut mat size and crepe paper size being smaller. I add a rectangle shape to my design that’s the size of my crepe paper and then arrange it to the back. I’ll then place my cut pieces on this to utilize as much of my crepe as I can. Move this rectangle off the pieces you just arranged and attach those pieces together. Cricut will now cut to your paper size. Just be sure your rectangle width is no more than 11.5 inches. And, hide the rectangle or delete it or it will appear as an object to cut.
Great idea, Cheryl!
Thank you so much! I just signed up again. I don’t want to miss a single Member Make. Even though I don’t always make the flower I love watching all three of you make yours. You even give me a couple of laughs 🙂 The flowers are always so beautiful. I also appreciate your wonderful website, great things to see and make everywhere.
Thank you, Donna. I am so happy to hear you enjoy them. 🙂
I find that it has been problematic to cut these on the cricut. I size it perfectly and then go to continue and it puts it on the mat to cut and it is too long on the page? I ended up splitting the images so they would fit.
We have adjusted the pattern slightly so that all petals and center should now fit on one sheet of 12×10 crepe paper. We always strive to make sure you can get the most out of your crepe paper, if you ever need to adjust the placement of pieces to better suit your needs you can always ungroup the elements and rearrange them into your desired placement. Then be sure to select all element and attach before cutting so that the cricut software does not rearrange them for you. 🙂
I’m a member but I did not get an e-mail link this month. There was a problem last month also but I was able to find that video later. Is there something wrong with my account?
Thanks.
Donna
I think your account is fine, but perhaps your email is missing from our program that manages our emails. An easy fix might be to sign up for email again. You can find this at the bottom of the page in the green bar on the right-hand side. This will ensure we have your current email address.
Since the crepe paper is only 10-inches, you always have to move some pieces to a new mat. I wish Cricut would give us the option of setting the length and width ourselves or let us move items in batches instead of one at a time. As a designer, perhaps you can give them these comments.

We find it much easier to do this than to move pieces one by one onto a different mat. 🙂
I am continuing to run into trouble with the actual width and length of the paper being less than 12″ by 12″. My paper is consistently just over 11″ wide, and just under 10′ deep. With this particular pattern, it is so dense that there is no way I can cut out the entire pattern! How do you do this in the shop?
Thank you for sharing any wisdom!
Tami M.
We cut our paper in 12″ lengths. The cut petal area measures 11.4″ x 8.5″. Double check that the sizing is correct using the box surrounding the pattern and the sizing listed in the upper left corner.
Hi Lia,
What will we be using the Steel Ball Shaping Tool — 4mm and 6mm tool for? Is there something else we can use instead?
Laura
We will be using the steel ball tool to shape the petals, you can use your fingers instead (which will be difficult because of the small petal sizes) or a bead of similar size glued to the tip of a thick stem wire to mimic the same shape of the steel ball.
One word of warning, with the medium cotton setting, on Maker 3 (not bonded cotton) it pretty much rips up my green mats, but i can still get good use out of them enough times. For fine crepe, i used medium, but forgot to turn on less pressure. I am not sure if that is best, but it sure does cut it absolutely perfectly. Maybe i’ll run some tests, but I’m sure they’ll update the software and the settings will change yet again!
Next batch I do, i will try with lesser pressure and see if it keeps the mats a bit less cut. It doesn’t cut all the way through the actual mat, but I can see the plastic lifting off of it. All trial and error, and I’m a Senior IT security manager and former engineer, so it’s my duty to test things a lot. 😀
Running tests is always such a good idea, especially with the updates to the software. Thanks for sharing what you have learned.
As a comment to a previous post i made, i am happy to report that extra fine crepe paper is completely perfect with medium cotton setting on my maker 3. it did an excellent job.
Wonderful! I think it is good to find a setting that works for your own cutting machine since it seems all a just a bit different.
Hello Lia. Cricut is just beginning to cut the parts for the Member Make and I’m confused. The PDF pattern shows all green part to be cut from Double Sided Ferns & Moss paper but the materials list includes Extra-Fine Juniper. What should be cut from the Extra-Fine?
The Extra-Fine Juniper will be used for wrapping the stems.
Is the heavy crepe paper used as is or streched before cutting? If stretched by how much? I’m looking forward to this member make, actually I look forward to all of them.
Thank you.
No need to stretch the crepe paper before cutting! We will be stretching and shaping the petals after cutting.
When cuttng the heavy crepe paper are you streching it out or using ax is? Recently you seem to have been stretching at least 50% which I find not only makes the paper go further, but also lightens up the weighty look of the paper.
Look forward to another new flower. My unit is looking like a florist shop, and the best part is people think they are real. Obviously it is because of the excellent teaching from you and your team.
Thank you for all your efforts.
Bernedina
