A boxwood topiary is a great way to add some greenery to your home. While these crepe paper plants look intricate, they are actually quite simple to make! Just follow the six steps below to craft your own.
Think Outside the Box
Our designer Angela created these boxwood topiaries using styrofoam balls in two sizes (6″ and 8″). Of course, you can always use whatever size you prefer!
She also used our double-sided, extra fine crepe paper. This will give your boxwood topiary great texture and depth. Along with these two materials, you will need a cutting machine or detail scissors and a low-temp hot glue gun to glue the leaves on your styrofoam ball.
Before you make your boxwood topiary, here are some helpful hints to keep in mind. One package of our double-sided green crepe paper yields 320 leaves total (160 leaves in Green Tea & Cypress and 160 in Ferns & Moss). Cut 9X12 sheets will give you 40 leaves for each sheet. So, four 9×12 sheets per package will make 320 leaves. This means you’ll need three packages of crepe paper to make the two sizes you see here.
Once you’ve gathered your tools and materials, download the SVG file or printable template to cut the leaves for your boxwood topiary. Then just follow our easy-peasy instructions below. If you need a visual, check out the photo tutorial from this project.

This my 2nd LG project. I have everything ready. I’m a little disappointed that there isn’t one photo or short video for directions. While I’m sure this is a simple project, most of us are visual people. Having never worked with crepe paper, it would’ve been helpful. It would also be great to see what setting works best on the Maker.
Hi Sheila,
When cutting crepe paper on the maker we like to use the heavy fabrics (like denim) setting for heavy crepe paper and double sided, we use the Fabric cotton setting for our extra fine crepe paper. We do have this boxwood https://liagriffith.com/crepe-paper-boxwood-topiaries/ that does have a photo tutorial that you can reference while making this!
Thank you for the link. I would not have known to twist the centers by following the other tutorial.
I’m glad that helped!
Hello,
I absolutely love your crepe paper flowers and am hoping to sign up for membership next year! I would really like to start making the crepe flowers but could you please tell me if your own crepe papers are vegan friendly, do they contain any animal products or anything that was tested on animals? Also do you know if florist tape contain any animal products? I have looked online but cannot find what is used for the wax coating.
Thank you for your time
Kind Regards
Amanda
Hi Amanda, we’d love to have you as a member! Our crepe papers are vegan friendly, and we’ll find out about the floral tape. Feel free to send us a follow up email in a couple weeks to hello@liagriffith.com, hope we have an answer by then! Update: the floral tape is vegan friendly! The wax is petroleum based, not beeswax, and the company does not test on animals.
I love these! I do have a question: Does it have to be the Cricut Maker? I have the Cricut Explore Air.
Thank You.
Bonnie
Hi Bonnie! Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, you cannot use the Cricut Air 2 for cutting crepe paper, you could use it to make it out of a different material though!
Please let us know if you have any further questions and we would be happy to help!
