Today we are adding some cozy texture to our kitchen with these felt ball trivets! The holiday season is approaching and usually that means dinner parties and entertaining. If you want to protect your tables from hot platters and pans, you can easily craft up a DIY trivet or two using felted balls in your favorite colors. This project is super simple, and also a great gift option for tweens and teens to make for their family members!
Trivets with Texture
We used 3cm felt balls for our DIY trivet. But we also recommend using 2cm balls, which we now carry in our shop! We went with a fall color scheme for our trivets, but you can pick whatever colors you like.
While you are making your trivets, feel free to also make some matching coasters. You can use the same technique, or arrange the balls in a circle instead. It’s up to you!
Skill level: Beginner
Crafting tips: Arrange your felt balls before you start sewing to make sure that the finished trivet looks cohesive. We made our DIY trivet a perfect square with seven balls on each side. This measures to about 6.5 inches wide.

I’m very keen to try this but wondering if felt melts with hot items placed on it?
Hi Ruth! If you use 100% wool felt it will work wonderfully and not melt.
Would it be possible to use some kind of good glue rather than thread?
You can try hot glue or I also think glitter glue would work.
In step 8, you said to thread needle and hide the tails in the felt balls but does that mean sew them into the balls? I end up with some thread showing – can the tails just be cut off after you tie the knots or will it come apart? Thanks! Great tutorial except this last step as I can’t see from the picture what you did?
Yes, after tying the end, before you clip the threads, slide your needle through the nearest ball to the other side and clip the thread right where it comes out of the ball. This will hide your thread tail.

Thank you for the instructions!! I made these for Christmas gifts and they were very well received! I did add a thread though the perimeter balls so that I could tighten it up at the end, that seemed to work well and help me keep it even.

Lia, this is a wonderful project ~ thank you so much! It’s funny, I’ve been collecting these felt balls for some time now. A few here, a few there, whenever I could find colors (and prices!) I like. I was planning to make a garland out of them for the Christmas tree, but now I’m seeing trivets for Christmas gifts! I just love your projects ~ thanks again.

What is going on? When I try to print the directions I get 186 pages. Most are blank until I get near page 152 then I find the current project. Can you tell me why that is happening? It is very annoying.
Hi Judi, I just checked the PDF and it looks fine on my end (it’s only 2 pages). You might be printing the website pages as opposed to the downloaded PDF– be sure you download and open the PDF and see that it’s 2 pages before you print.
