Felt_No_Sew_Dragon_Costume_DIYThis week we are starting a series of homemade Halloween costumes that are great for last minute and are no-sew! Woo hoo! I will start the series with this adorable little dragon costume. Even though I do sew, it seemed like a fun project to create these cute costumes (there will be 4 total) using gorgeous wool blend felt that I found in Benzie Design’s Etsy shop, a coordinating fabric for the cape, iron-on fuze and elastic ribbon. The last three materials I found at my local fabric store. The color palette for this dragon started with the fabric I found for the dragon wings. You may not find the exact same fabric but if you shop in the quilting section, there are a lot of great choices. For your cape you will need 1/2 yard to 1 yard of fabric depending on your child’s age. I used less than a 1/2 yard for this 3-year-old costume. You will want to pick up 2 yards of matching elastic ribbon to use for the mask, tie around the neck of the cape and wrist bands. You will also need a half yard of iron-on fuse, which you will need to assemble all of the pieces of your mask. I like using fuse better than hot glue on felt as it keeps things flat and crisp. For the red fire flames, I simply glued two pieces onto a wooden dowel so that my little dragon could have some interactive play. For tools you will need sharp fabric scissors, pinking sheers for the cape, an iron and a hot glue gun. I love to use pinking sheers for no-sew projects to keep any edges from fraying with the zig zag cut. I also used white chalk to draw the outline of my wings onto the fabric. You can use a white pencil or even a soft crayon. For my felt, I chose two shades of green, a teal, black and red for the fire.

Once you have gathered all of your materials and tools, you can download the dragon mask pattern and guide for the cape wings at the end of this post. I have prepared a step-by-step tutorial to show you how I assembled the mask and the cape. I know there is one happy little dragon here in these photos and you could have one too. Come back tomorrow for an adorable (and easy peasy) super girl costume! ~ Lia
