handmade macrame purse

Knot your average purse

This macrame purse features three different knots with fringe at the bottom. You can use a natural color of macrame cord like we did, or craft yours in a different color. We’d love to see your version, so be sure to share photos with us on our crafters community page or by using the hashtag #MadeWithLia on Instagram.

Skill level: Intermediate, mostly due to the time it takes

Knots used: Larks Head Knot, Square Knot, and Alternating Pattern using Square Knots. Want more guidance on these knots? Check out our skills course: 15 Macrame Knots for Beginners

Crafting tip: You can make this bag with fringe at the bottom or without — we show you how in the tutorial.

Other projects shown: Frosted paper plum blossom branch and cardstock paper dogwood branch

How to Make a Macrame Purse

  1. Gather your craft tools and materials from the list above.
  2. Cut sixty 7 foot cords and two 1 foot cords.
  3. At one end of a wooden dowel, tie 10 cords around the dowel. Fold each cord in half then tie around the dowel using a larks head knot.
  4. At the opposite end of the same dowel tie another 10 cords around the dowel using a larks head knot.
