Taking part in the Michaels Dream Tree Challenge is something I relish, and this year we took it one step further and challenged ourselves to make and design as many of the Christmas ornaments as we could – using supplies from our local Michaels store. Today I wanted to share our painted wooden ball ornament set with you. It’s a nifty little project that allows your creative side to run free! Begin with a selection of wooden balls in various sizes and screw eye hooks into the top. You can then tape off parts of the wooden balls with washi and begin painting. We suggest that you tape all the balls first, then paint all the gold parts. Leave them to dry, peel off the tape and repeat the same process with the next color, then the next. The beauty of using wooden balls is that you can leave part of the ball showing. The wood grain adds a lovely texture to your tree and looks great no matter the color palette you chose to use. Once your layers are dry, you can add a length of gold thread to the eye screw and your wooden ball ornaments are ready to hang.
To see our other handmade tree decorations, take a peek at our Scandinavian wood stars, our cute paper houses, our glittery paper geodes, and our fun pinecone birds. Keep your eyes peeled for more fun, simple DIY projects from our studio, head over to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to see what we are sharing next. Enjoy! ~Lia

I actually sell these wooden balls in my Etsy shop. http://Www.toyingaround.etsy.com. I would say if you went with a 2″ or smaller you would be okay on the weight for your branches. Such a great idea!
Thanks for the link!
Awesome ornaments! Love these!!….. I’m looking at getting the large wooden balls to make diy ornaments as well, and was curious if you think the large ones are too heavy for the tree? Thank you!!
It just depends on the type of tree you have, but they should be fine on thicker branches 🙂
