Heavenly Helicona
Go to papercut paradise with these striking crepe paper helicona flowers! As part of our Pacific Islands bouquet for Cricut, these helicona add a bold contrast to the tropical mix. With just a few simple tools and materials, and a set of easy-to-follow steps, try these flowers on their own or make them to add to your bouquet. In addition to these vibrant helicona, we’ll be introducing you to our crepe paper pincushions, crepe paper birds of paradise, and tropical greenery in the coming days. Tools & Materials
- Craft Scissors
- Low-Temp Hot Glue Gun
- Needle-Nose Pliers/Wire Cutters
- Lia Griffith Heavy Crepe Paper – Nectarine, Juniper
- Floral Tape — Fern
- Crayon – Yellow Green
- Aluminum Tubing – 36” x 7/32”
Steps
- Gather the tools and materials listed above.
- Cut out the crepe paper according to our template notes using scissors or a cutting machine.
- Use the side of the yellow green crayon to color the point of each petal on both sides.
- Cup each petal by stretching it from the center with your fingers.

I also see the flower in the picture has 7 petals but the template (locked down and requested below it be unlocked) only has 6 petals. Please explain?

I have no idea. Again, this is a very old project made by one of our designers. You can add that additional petal if you like. I am sure in nature they do very.

This project was made at least 6 years ago and since then Cricut has updated their software to manage SVGs differently. I have updated this file for you.

What do you think of substituting the metal tubing with a dowel rod? It would be less expensive and lighter weight.
Sure! You will need to make sure the crepe paper cover over the stem will stick to the metal. Maybe experiment with some different white glues?
Can your heavy crepe paper be used as a substitute for the floralistic crepe paper?
YES! This is an older project that we created before our heavy crepe paper was available in these colors. I have updated the post with links to our paper. Thanks for the reminder that this needed an update 🙂
where would I find floristic crepe paper- golden rod? I clicked the link and searched and it said unfound on the crepe.com website. Also what is the gm for this crepe? what could I use that would be similar?

I purchased the Cricut Maker after following along with these posts and I’m struggling to get it to work with the heavier weight crepes. Are you changing the settings for the crepe paper under the custom materials menu? I’m finding it’s really more perforating the heavy weight crepe (160/180gsm “floristic crepe” like you used here) rather than cutting it, so I’m still having to cut it out of the sheet with scissors of clean all of the edges. Not really the time saver I’d hope for. 🙁 Any tips would be appreciated!
Hi Carrie! We’ve played around with this and have most success using a strong grip mat, and cutting on the fabric setting under the heavy weight (denim) fabric setting. You can also try stretching the crepe slightly before cutting. I hope that helps!

I wanted to ask how are you using the Cricut Maker to cut crepe paper? After uploading an image to cut, there is no “crepe paper” option under the paper section of materials.
Also, I tried putting in the rotary blade instead of the fine point blade (although the instructions still just say to load the fine point blade) and the machine was saying it could not detect any blade.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
We’ve used the fabric setting and rotary blade when cutting crepe. The machine may not “detect” the blade if the setting isn’t compatible with the rotary blade, so just do a few test cuts to see what setting works best!

Am I reading this correctly that the new Cricut can cut crepe? I would think the mat would stretch the paper when removing.

This is true! The double sided crepe is the best of course. It cuts like butter with the rotary blade and can be removed from the mat easily. The other crepes works as well. Our tips: don’t use a super sticky mat. With the rotary blade it pushed down rather than drags across the material so it does not stretch the crepe. To get the crepe off the mat, make sure and pull along the grain to not stretch, (and use a low stick, highly used mat). 😉
Lia…..the link you give for the ‘crepe paper ginger flower’ is actually metallic paper, not crepe paper. I am somewhat confused about the cutting machine part of the instructions. I assume that the instructions mean a cricut machine. I am most sure I read somewhere in your comments to someone that you don’t use a cricut machine for crepe paper. Am I wrong? A cricut machine would definitely help me, but I mostly use crepe paper, therefore, I haven’t invested the money in a machine.
Hi Carol, thanks for pointing that out. It should say “metallic paper ginger flower”, and I have corrected that. There are several brands of cutting machines, but we use the Cricut here. The Cricut Explore machines that we use here do not cut crepe paper, but they actually just launched a new machine called the Cricut Maker that cuts crepe! It’s available at the end of the August 🙂
Great……as a neophyte of cutting machines, may I please ask a few questions? I assume that you do not yet have the Cricut Maker (Aug 20 release date). If you do have it, how do you like it and how well does it cut crepe paper? If there is another crepe paper cutting machine that you recommend, could you please name it for me? Are your SVG files compatible with several cutting machines?
We do have a Maker here in the studio. We were able to get an early release machine to create the 9 bouquets for the Cricut event. At this time the Maker is the only machine that cuts crepe paper. We LOVE this machine as it will cut some of our other favorite materials (fabric, felt and leather). If you are going to invest in a machine. . . the Maker is my recommendation.

We will be! Just remember that only the Cricut Maker will work for the crepe paper cutting.
Oh yes, I know. I have been following you diligently on Facebook and I am definitely getting myself a cricut maker.
