This is an ideal project for our intermediate makers, especially those who love the little details and don’t mind slowing down to shape, curl, and layer. Our extra fine crepe paper gives this Dutch iris’ petals that soft, natural look that we love. You’ll only need a few basic tools to get started and when you’re ready to begin — we’ll be waiting for you in the tutorial!
The iris, named after the Greek goddess of rainbows, has a long history steeped in symbolism. It can represent faith, hope, wisdom, and royalty. It’s also a symbol of friendship and admiration — well-deserving of a handmade tribute. These Crepe Paper Dutch Iris Flowers would make a wonderful and heartfelt present for Mother’s Day or any day a loved one could use a little rainbow in their life.
What makes this flower truly stand out is its contrast — the slender upright petals paired with flared, arching falls give the iris its iconic silhouette. Crepe paper adds a dreamy softness that mimics the real thing while offering the benefit of long-lasting beauty. For our project, we went with white and purple crepe paper, but you can mix it up with rich blues, soft yellows, or even something unexpected. (Crepe paper doesn’t judge.)
So if you’re ready for a calming, creative challenge, this iris is a wonderful place to start. Let yourself slow down, shape each petal, and enjoy the process as your flower begins to bloom.

I would love to add Matiljia poppies to your list of projects!
Done! On the list.
Thanks!
Hi I cant get my cricut machine to recognise the download for this pattern, how do I overcome this please.
Here is a video on how to upload our SVG templates to the cricut. You can even take the full course. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/a-crafters-guide-to-the-cricut-maker/lessons/1-lia-griffith-files-for-the-cricut/
thankyou
The Crepe Paper Flowers book doesn’t address how to deal with the 3 sepals. Where do I look for information on this assembly?
You can see them in this tutorial. I do not have the book in front of me, but you can add them to the stem below your flower then use floral tape to attach them to the stem.
Yikes! I didn’t realize getting the svg files from your linked comment counted against the monthly downloads.
Yes, if you downloaded the files in the project, then that counts as one download. If something happened in error, please email us more details at hello@liagriffith.com!
Hi,
Looking for the SVG files for this – is it available?
Please advise…thanks…
It’s available in this post: https://liagriffith.com/heavy-crepe-paper-iris-with-svg-cut-file/
Is the Iris in a svg file?
There’s an SVG in this post: https://liagriffith.com/heavy-crepe-paper-iris-with-svg-cut-file/
Should gold crepe paper be added to the materials list? I thought I bought everything to make these, but now that I’m sitting down to do it, it’s mentioning gold crepe for the sepals…?
Yes, thank you for catching that! You could color white crepe with a gold pen, too.
Can we convert these into cut files?
We’ll be posting the SVG files in a couple weeks!
Thank you can’t wait!!!!
OH my gosh – how stunning are these??? The detailing is so life like, even the gold bits (not quite sure what the correct botanical name is – lol)!
Oh I love making Iris–I’ve done some bearded Iris which have a few more details, but the same structure. Yours are BEAUTIFUL!!! — as always!!
xoxo
Susan
Thanks Susan! 😉
Beautiful and will have a try at making these . Wonder if there will be a video for this as I think it is crucial to put the petals together correctly and I can’t quite “get it ” from the pictures
Many thanks Sue x
Thank you, Sue! I don’t have a video for the Iris, but show this technique in my Parrot Tulip video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDatsdbBN8A (the petals are made around the 7:40 mark 🙂 )
