You will also need floral wire and floral tape for this project. Once you have your materials ready, download the templates below. Use the SVG to upload directly to your cutting machine, or download the PDF if you are cutting by hand. If you are using the PDF file, you can print the template directly onto the paper you will be using for your flowers and cut from there. After you have your pieces trimmed and ready to go, follow the step-by-step photo tutorial below to guide you through the assembly process. Attach your paper rose bud to a piece of floral wire with hot glue, and then cover it will floral tape before gluing on your leaves. There are two versions of the paper rose bud representing different stages of blooming.

HI! I can’t seem to download the full tutorial for the paper rose bud. I’m quite certain I viewed it a week ago, but now I’m only able to download the template. Just wondered if it would be possible to add a link to the tutotial. Thanks!
Sorry about that! The photo tutorial is now available as a download.
Why, when I save the svg files, do they always save as zip files? I then have a problem uploading them to the cricut design space because they are zip files (I assume that’s why I can’t upload them). What is the correct process for saving the file to my computer in the svg format?
Our website doesn’t allow us to upload SVG files, so we have to “zip” them. We have a handy tutorial in this post for you 🙂 https://liagriffith.com/how-to-use-svg-files-for-cricut/
I can’t seem to get these right. I am at a loss where exactly the spot of glue goes on each petal. I’m left-handed so that may be contributing to my confusion.
We plan to shoot a video for this flower, I know it’s a little tricky! The glue should be close to the middle of the petal and along the edge– just enough to keep them together but not on the larger end since those will be curled out. It’s best to do them one by one (even though the photo shows what it looks like when they’re al gathered together).
The rounded tip petals are added after the pointed petals are glued into a spiral? Or are they added to the line of petals to before the spiral? Having trouble figuring this one out.
The round tip petals are added after, between pointed petals. This is if you are wanting a larger bud, it adds to the size.
Do you happen to have any tips on making boutonnieres with these rose buds?
Yes, here’s a photo tutorial on making a boutonniere! https://liagriffith.com/paper-flower-diy-corsage-and-boutonniere-tutorial/
Please, please, puh-leeze, make a video for these beautiful rosebuds! I’ve not been able to nail this project. 🙁
This one is actually on our photo list, stay tuned 🙂
YAY! I so need a video to show me how to do the green part of the bud (I always forget what it’s actually called). I think the rest of it I can get from the picture instructions.
It’s super simple– just cross over the 2 parts that are separated by the slit, and glue.
Hi Lia! I’m going to make your rosebuds for my wedding, and I have a Cricut Explore Air, but can you get me started on HOW I use an SVG file to have my machine cut out the shapes, so I don’t have to waste time cutting them by hand? My Cricut is new, so we’re just getting acquainted, and I’m running out of time! I would really appreciate a little guidance, even if you send me to a You Tube video, or somewhere else online! Thank you!
Hi Melanie! I have a video on uploading SVG files here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZTCRUBYG0M) but Cricut’s site and YouTube channel have lots of great videos (https://www.youtube.com/user/OfficialCricut). Have fun!!
Hey Lia,
I truly just read ALL of the comments before I posted this. I do not see the SVG that has 10 petals and 3 leaves. Am I missing something?
Hey Allison, you can change the quantity in Design Space to cut the number you need! 🙂
Dear Lia – first, I loved seeing you on Kathy Lee & Hoda with 4th of July decorations. A lot of fun. I tried the paper rose bud and I am very pleased with the results. This is the first time I have used florists tape and it worked fine, but was so sticky. Do you have a brand that you like or are they all very sticky?
Many thanks,
Nancy
Thank you Nancy, I had a lot of fun on The Today Show! Good floral tape will be waxy and a little sticky. My line of floral tape will be available for purchase this summer (we’ll share links to online shops as soon as it’s ready!)
These are beautiful! Would this pattern also work on crepe paper?
Thank you, I’m so glad you like these! This template would not work for crepe paper, but I will be posting a crepe paper rose bud template soon 😉 Stay tuned!
You are just amazing lia . Your each and everything thing is new and impressive love your crafts a lot …❤
Thank you so much for your kind words!! That is so sweet of you, I am so happy to hear you are liking the projects 🙂
Mmmm can’t get my 5 petal fan to resemble a rose bud ?
Sue x
We like to practice new designs a few times to get it right! You can use regular printer paper to practice with until you are happy with your shape. Then go back to your pretty papers for the final product. Don’t give up, sometimes it just takes a little practice to get it right. Let us know how you get on!
These look super cute and am all cut out and ready to go .I have a question Lia . There are two different petal shapes and from the pictures can’t decide which ones to use where ?.Could you clarify this for me please .
Happy days
Sue
Hi Sue, Use the petals with the pointy edge in the middle of your bud and the rounded edge petals on the outside! Good luck 🙂
Lia love ur roses im making a bunch for my sons wedding for bauqets
How wonderful! 🙂
Lia I wish you had a tutorial on how to make these. I keep making them wrong. and I so want to make these so bad for my mom
Hi Valerie, did you see the photo tutorial in the post? I hope that is helpful!
just wondering noticed there are a total of 10 petals then 5 is this for just one flower? I’m thinking it is but I could be wrong please help……
Use 10 petals to create a larger rose bud, and 5 petals to make a smaller one 🙂
Hi Lia,
I love these rosebuds — they look so real! Wow!!I was curious as to why your newer paper flower posts only have one petal shape to cut — I guess one just has to trace the additional petals and then cut, but I liked it when you had all the petals outlined and ready to cut. I think I’m actually going to just get a Cricut though which will make my life easier. 🙂
Liz
I just updated the PDF to include multiple petals! But you should definitely get a Cricut, it is an amazing tool. Look for my teal machine with bonus projects at Michaels or through the link on my website 🙂
Would you consider making video of these rosebuds? I do better watching someone making them, then I do reading directions. Thanks for sharing your talents with us!
My dream is to one day share all my projects with video tutorials. We are actually working on a series of video tutorials. I hadn’t planned on doing a video for the rose buds but will consider it.
i dont know where i am going wrong. i can not seem to glue it the right place without it falling apart or not forming a cone
Try a bit more hot glue, and hold it in place a little longer to be sure it dries!
Hi lia can you show us where to place the glue and how to place the other petals. I really would like to see a video tutorial . Please
We are working on making more videos, it is just more time consuming and a tad bit expensive to make one for every post;-)
Absolutely gorgeous! The instructions mention an SVG file is available, but I only see a PDF. Thanks.
The SVG file has been uploaded, thanks for letting me know! 🙂
Thank you!
🙂
I had tried to make my own rosebuds but Lia these look so much better than my poor attempt. Though saying that using your templates has meant I now do have the confidence to try my own designs even if they aren’t as good as yours!
I look forward to making these and adding them into a rose bouquet I am making for a friend’s wedding anniversary.
Love your designs and can’t wait to get my craft room finished so I can start to use my Cricut Explore Air.

Your sweet comment put a huge smile on my face:-) I am all about teaching a reigniting creativity.
Trying these today so excited!
Excuse me where is the SVG file?
It’s there now! 🙂
Hi Lia
Do you have an SVG for this? If not I’ll convert.
Love it! ??
I just uploaded it, sorry for the delay! 🙂
Beautiful, as always.
Thank you! 🙂
Thanks so much for the templates and directions. I want to make a small bud vase for my mom for Mother’s Day.
How nice, I’m sure she will love it!
any way we can get this in a Svg file instead of a pdf?
The SVG has been uploaded!
thanks so much Lia…..again love your flowers!!!!
Your roses are so real looking as are all the flowers you create.
Thank you so much for sharing.
Sharyn
