VIDEO: Crepe Paper Wild Poppies
We’ve created quite a few poppies here at Lia Griffith over the last 10 years. They come in so many different varieties it’s difficult to choose a favorite. Because of its versatility, we’ve crafted our poppies from felt, tissue paper, and for this month’s video tutorial— crepe paper. This Crepe Paper Wild Poppy Flower DIY is such a happy addition to our extensive poppy collection. We just know you’re going to love it!
If you want to get a jump on this project, use the template below to precut the petals, center strips, and leaves before the live class. Note that the template indicates when to pre-stretch your crepe paper before cutting. This will give you a more delicate flower.

I needed a retirement gift and was going for wine with the wreath and metallic leaves, made 2 two of those recently. Easy and very nice looking. But then I asked does she drink wine…no! So I found this. Ended up making 10 of them and placed them in a cute floral coffee mug tying them to the handle (as I made fairly long stems). It turned out adorably and will be given in the morning. Thank you!
I have an Explore Air 2 – thinking after this I will add a second machine, Maker 3! Does it definitely do a good job with crepe paper cutting?
That sounds amazing! Share photos on the community page. 🙂
The Maker with the rotary blade does cut the extra-fine and double-sided beautifully. And, I usually have good luck with the heavy, but there are a few tricks. Here is a little skill course we created that you might enjoy when you get your Maker. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/a-crafters-guide-to-the-cricut-maker/
Lia what is the size of the finished flower?
Thank you Patricia
The flowers are about 2.25 inches wide when they are fully open.
Hi Lia
I went to click on the link for the raspberry crepe paper, but it’s linked to the juniper. Just a head’s up! So excited to make these!
Yes! Thanks for the heads up. I just updated it. 🙂
Could you tell me where you buy your beautiful ribbon?
It is a brand called May Arts. My favorites are the silks. At one point I was able to get it by the yard at my favorite fabric store before they closed.
Hi Lia,
I enjoyed your video and I am looking forward to making the poppies.
I don’t have a cutting machine, so I am asking, what is the best way to transfer a pattern to the crepe paper?
Many thanks,
Binnie
Once you print the PDF template, you can cut out the pattern pieces and place them onto the crepe. Here is an old video where I show how to cut using templates. Since then, I have discovered using mini clips to hold the pattern onto the crepe paper. https://liagriffith.com/crepe-paper-anemone-flowers-video/
I still cannot see the SVG. Do I need to use a specific browser? Have not had the issue with other downloads from your site. Thanks.
Everything is now in one zipped folder. Once you download and unzip, you will see all of the versions of the template in the folder. 🙂
Where i USA are you located? I am from Denmark and have to find the Danish time schedule for the live video.
We are in Portland, Oregon, which is on the west coast. I hope you can join us!
The template calls for heavy Raspberry but the notes say not to stretch the heavy honeysuckle of the same color. Tad confused. Please clarify before the live or people are going to be confused.
So I did use a raspberry and a honeysuckle. The latter is lighter. For the raspberry piece, I did stretch before cutting, but the honeysuckle will need to be creped for that step. You can wait to cut these after you see the video. That might be helpful. 🙂
The pattern calls for heavy juniper leaves and I can’t see why. Also heavy Juniper is not an option to buy. Please fix this file.
We do sell heavy Juniper. Here is a link. https://feltpaperscissors.com/product/heavy-floristic-botanical-garden-juniper/
I used the heavy juniper for the leaves, but you are welcome to use what you like best. 😉
I tried to download the files, I imported the svg files, but when I uploaded them, they looked fine. But when I try to “add to canvas”, all I get is a black box.
Sorry about that, Dottie. I made a mistake. But. . . I uploaded a NEW version of the SVG and that one works. I just used it to prep for the class on Friday. 🙂
I want to make the wild poppy’s but not Abe to print the template
Can you tell me what you mean, maybe give me more details? Did you download and open the folder?
Can’t upload the poppy. Just getting an 8’x8′ black box when I try to download this and upload to my CDS.
I just fixed that black box. Give it another go. 🙂
For some reason I can’t bring up the template to start cutting my flowers.
Hi Carol, here is a video to show you how to download compressed files. Let me know if you are still having a difficult time. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/a-crafters-guide-to-the-cricut-maker/lessons/1-lia-griffith-files-for-the-cricut/
I’m a bit confused about this download. I went to get the template so I could cut out the petals etc. but all I got was a colored page showing all the pieces but they were small. I’m not very familiar with the computer and downloading, perhaps I have to do something else?? I’m more used to getting the full size pieces to cut out. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Helen. If you use the PDF, simply print it at full size, not “fit page.” The print will be the correct size. If you are using the SVG, I just added a scale to the template so that will be the correct size. These flowers are very small. Let me know if that helps. 😉
How many petals do we need to cut out per flower?
Four. The template is set up for one flower.
I’ve downloaded the template, but it doesn’t give any indication of size?
Hi Nicole. If you use the PDF, simply print it at full size, not “fit page.” The print will be the correct size. If you are using the SVG, I just added a scale to the template. 😉
When will the video be posted? Thanks!
We will post it right after the LIVE event on July 14 at 11 PT. Hope you can join us for the live!
It appears that the svg is not in my unzipped folder. Thank you.
Whoops! Sometimes I goof. It is there now. 😉
For the download, I only see an ai file and a pdf file, but no svg file. Will that be added soon?
Yes! Thanks for pointing it out. My mistake. 😉
