A few weekends ago I was fiddling around with some crepe to add flowers to our crepe paper ruffle cake that our maker Jessica created. These jumbo paper peonies were born! Peonies are a really popular wedding flower, so they were a perfect match for the cake decor. And if you are going to be making your own flowers out of paper, why not make them larger than life for your very special day?
Tools & Materials
- Craft Scissors
- Pinking Shears
- Low-Temp Hot Glue Gun
- Lia Griffith Double-Sided Crepe Paper – Blush + Chiffon, Peach + Petal, Green Tea + Cypress
- 1″ Foam Balls
Steps
- Gather the tools and materials listed above.
- Print the PDF template at the bottom of the post and cut your crepe according to the pattern.
- Wrap the circular piece of crepe around the foam ball. Cut one edge of each rectangular piece with pinking shears, then fringe along the pinked edge.
- Glue the three fringed pieces around the foam ball so that they taper upward, covering half of the ball (see photo tutorial).

Tips
Scroll below to Shop this Project to find the crepe paper that I used for these gorgeous blooms. I chose a soft color palette for my peonies, but you can easily choose a bolder pink if that is a better fit for your color palette. Just make sure that you are using the double sided rather than the extra fine – the extra fine will be too flimsy for the oversized petals. Feel free to build out the petals as much as you would like as you are making. Once you are finished you can use these peonies for wedding or bridal shower decor. Add some floral wire to turn them into DIY centerpieces!

Can you tell me the ending dimensions of the flower are?
They are about 14 inches wide.
Lia, these bouquets are AMAZING!! How many crepe paper sheets does it take for one flower?
I made these a while back, so I am going on memory here, but you can make a flower from one sheet. Maybe two flowers.
I’m confused about this pattern – the SVG file and PDF are completely different. Today I was working with the SVG… there is only one (1) of each petal (for three sizes of flower if I understand) in the file – if I duplicate the image (6 for large petal and 15/ea for the med/small as specified) how many flowers will that make? The instructions don’t specify how many petals of each size for each flower.
Also, the ‘stamen’ layers aren’t attached and show as separate cuts when I ‘make it’.
Actually, no layers are properly attached and are not usable as downloaded. I can, with some effort, manipulate the file to make it work – however, it seems that if I am being charged for this file, it should be a functional product.
Hi Raini. Sorry for the frustration. This is an older project that was designed before Cricut could cut crepe so I agree that the SVG is not set up optimally. We have learned so much in the last 6 years. ;-). The PDF is correct and it lists on each template piece the quantities you will need to cut to make ONE flower with leaves, not three different sizes of flowers. The flower has 8 smaller petals, 6 larger petals, and 2 leaves that are “V” cut (so 4 pieces to make 2 leaves). There is not a large, medium, or small version of this flower, but you can change the size of the template to make it smaller. When cutting by hand it makes more sense that you have one template per shape. When cutting on the Cricut we included each petal, as this is a completely different process. That is why the SVG and PDF look different though the actual template shapes are the same. The SVG is now updated to the standards that we have found work best at this point. Hope this helps, but reach out if you still need assistance. We are here for you. 🙂
One other note: I do recommend that you hand cut this flower since you will be able to get more from your crepe paper. With such large petals, there might be more waste when using the machine.
I would like to make these for a wedding arch but crepe paper is too expensive, can I use card?
Hi Beverley, we have peonies that are designed to be made using paper and would suggest flowing one of these projects if using paper. https://liagriffith.com/frosted-paper-semi-double-peony-video/ or https://liagriffith.com/jumbo-peonies-backdrop/
Thanks Lia, I can’t wait to start you have been an inspiration to me.
What size paper do we print the template on to 😊 xx
8.5×11 🙂
Is there a trick to using the svg download and cutting the crepe paper on the cricut? I am using your paper and cutting along the grain and selecting the right setting but it always seems to rip, any suggestions?
Hi Lynn! Are you using the Maker? We use a fabric mat with the crepe paper setting (sometimes “cotton” setting works, too) with the rotary blade.
These are beautiful! I’d love to make them for my front door but I’m sure the crepe would be quickly damaged by weather. Do you think spraying with sealant might extend their life? Gorgeous work!
Thank you! I’ve never found a sealant that works well and protects the flowers, unfortunately. I would just advise to bring the wreath in on really bad weather days if you can!

Hi
Why I can’t get an access to the templates , all I get black pages
Make sure you’re downloading them to your desktop, not opening them in the web browser.
If you buy the suggested blush package of paper, how many peonies can you get out of one package of paper?
You can get two peonies from one pack or two papers.
Hi Lia, anything with a Peony immediately gets my undivided attention. I love your post and the flowers look flipping fab x
Oh thank you! This is definitely a new favorite of mine 🙂
