9 Paper Flowers for Beginners (with video tutorials)
Paper Flowers for One & All
If you have wanted to make paper flowers but were not sure where to begin, this is the post for you.
I gathered nine of our prettiest beginner flowers, the ones I would hand to a friend picking up crepe paper for the very first time.
Every one of them comes with a free step-by-step video workshop, so you are never working from a photo and a guess. You craft right alongside me.

Nine pretty blooms, nine free video workshops, and not one that needs a machine.
And here is the thing I most want you to know, because so many of you ask: you do not need a Cricut or any cutting machine. Every flower here can be cut by hand with a good pair of scissors. The templates are yours to print, and a machine is a nice-to-have, never a must.
After thirteen years and hundreds of crepe paper tutorials, these are the ones I reach for when someone is just starting out. They are forgiving, they are quick, and they look lovely the moment you set them down.
You do not need to fuss over paper choice either. Each tutorial tells you exactly which crepe to reach for, so you can simply grab the colors you love and follow along.
New to crepe paper? Spend three minutes with 10 Things You'll Want to Know About Crepe Paper first. Then pick a flower below, and let's begin.
1. Crepe Paper Tulips

Beginner · 30 minutes · free video workshop
Tulips are where I would have anyone start. The petal is round and simple, forgiving of a wobble, and you get a cheerful pop of color fast. We make ours in honeysuckle, coral, and juniper, though any spring shade you love will do.
2. Crepe Paper Wild Poppies

Beginner · 30 minutes · free video workshop
A poppy is mostly a few soft petals and a dark center, which makes it a kind second flower. One small tip from the workshop: pre-stretch your crepe before you cut, and the petals come out thin and papery, just like the real thing.
3. Crepe Paper Dogwood Branch

Beginner · 30 minutes · free video workshop
If petals feel intimidating, start with a branch. A few flat blooms set along a stem, no dense petal counts to manage, and the payoff is big. This dogwood is light and sculptural, the very first hint of spring on bare wood.
4. Crepe Paper Cherry Blossom Branches

Beginner · 60 minutes · free video workshop
The same gentle branch idea, now in soft blossom pink. Cluster a few together and you have a whole spring centerpiece, lovely for a party, a wedding, or a window you walk past every morning.
5. Crepe Paper Quince Branch

Beginner · 60 minutes · free video workshop
This one is a member favorite, and a favorite of mine. I still have my original on my entry table years later, which is the quiet gift of paper branches: they last and last, no wilting, no watering, just a little nature indoors all year.
6. Crepe Paper Sweet Peas

Beginner · 30 minutes • free video workshop
Sweet peas are all ruffle and softness, romantic and a little old-fashioned. We make these in extra-fine crepe so the petals stay delicate and papery, with that lovely fluttered edge.
7. Crepe Paper English Rose

Beginner · 60 minutes · free video workshop
I know, a rose sounds like a leap. But this one looks far harder than it is, and the video carries you petal by petal. The finished bloom is so lifelike you will be tempted to check it for thorns.
8. Crepe Paper Potted Orchid

Beginner · 60 minutes · free video workshop
A whole potted orchid that never needs a sunny window. I taught this one alongside my daughter Emily, and it makes a heartfelt gift, the kind that is still blooming long after fresh flowers would have faded.
9. Crepe Paper Coral Charm Peony

Beginner · 60 minutes • free video workshop
This is the one many of you have seen, our most beloved peony, with its softly layered petals and warm coral-to-blush color. It looks like a graduation piece, and in a way it is. But the full workshop walks you through every curl, stretch, and petal, so you will make it sooner than you think.
Where to go from here
Pick the one that makes you smile and start there. The video will be right beside you the whole way.
When you are ready for more, my free foundation series walks you through crepe paper flowers from the very first petal, and our full paper flower library holds hundreds more for when you catch the bug.

Paper flower questions, answered
Do I need a Cricut or cutting machine? No. Every flower here can be cut by hand with scissors. The printable templates are included, and a machine only saves time on the fiddliest shapes.
What is the best paper for beginners? For most of these flowers, our heavy crepe is a friendly place to start. It has more body, so it holds its shape while you are still finding your hands. Each tutorial lists the exact paper it uses, so you never have to guess.
Which flower is the easiest to start with? A branch, like the dogwood, or the tulips. Branches have the fewest petals and are the most forgiving of a first try.
Are the video workshops really free? Yes. Every flower on this list includes a free video and a downloadable template, free for everyone.

Welcome Sharon! We are just about ready to start a new program for beginners called Craft Tracks. It will be ready by the end of the month. In the meantime, you can use the menu to look at all beginner paper flowers. You can scroll through and find something you would like to try. The projects that start with the word VIDEO will have a full tutorial. This is always really helpful.
Hi there can you step by step to make the flower possies. There beautiful
All of these flowers have a step-by-step video included.
Hello Lia. I would like to know if you sale flower’s petal and Leaves template.
Hi Jeanne. As a member of this site, you would have access to all of the templates and tutorials. If you would like some pre-cut petals and leaves, we offer them in our frosted paper over in the shop. https://feltpaperscissors.com/product-category/frosted-paper-flower-kits/
I would really love to try your flowers, but I don’t have a Cricut machine. Do you have a beginner kit that I could cut out with a scissors to see if this craft is really for me? Thanks, Tami
Hi Tami! You don’t *need* a cutting machine to make flowers. It comes in handy for smaller, detailed flowers but I still cut most of my crepe flowers by hand. We do have crepe paper flower AND frosted paper kits in our shop if you want to start there. This crepe paper anemone is also a great one to start with and cut by hand. Also, if you’re an annual member you should sign up for our (free!) Crepe Paper Flower class that begins May 1. We’ll teach you everything you need to know to get started making paper flowers!
Lia, I’ve to hold off on buying a cricut, but am concerned about scoring my flowers without it. How do I score effectively to get the detail on my flowers.
A bone folder and ruler would work great for adding scored details!
Subscribed as a monthly member and found there is nothing for a beginner to download! It was abit disappointing.
I’m sorry to hear that Chloe! This post you commented on has 9 of our favorite flowers that are great for beginners. Feel free to reach out to hello@liagriffith.com if you’d like some other specific suggestions!
