Become a MemberUPDATE: We have noticed a lot more traffic and links back to this post recently due to the Coronavirus. As a result, we have updated our original homemade hand sanitizer recipe based on CDC recommendations that hand sanitizer must be at least 60% alcohol to be effective. This recipe has not been tested in a lab and we cannot guarantee its efficacy against viruses as there are many variants that may affect your mixture, including the ingredients in your alcohol and aloe vera gel, how they interact, the cleanliness of your measuring tools, etc.
The best thing you can do to protect against germs is to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and avoid touching your face. But for those times when you’re not near a sink, you may want to have some hand sanitizer that’s easily accessible. I have always loved making my own natural beauty products, so this summer I decided to give homemade hand sanitizer a try.
By making my own products, I can customize them to my exact needs and preferences. In the past, I have played around with making my own deodorant, lotion, and lip balm. So I thought I might as well make some hand sanitizer to have in my purse and at my studio.
When you are making your homemade hand sanitizer, you can choose to use ethyl alcohol (180 proof or higher) or isopropyl alcohol (91% or 99%). You should be able to find each of these ingredients at your local pharmacy. Rubbing alcohol can dry out your hands, so I added some aloe vera gel and Vitamin E oil to my mixture.
For many of my homemade bath and beauty products, I like to add essential oil to my mixture. Essential oils not only add a lovely fragrance to the product, but they also can have certain health benefits. Some essential oils are even natural bacteria fighters (perfect for a hand sanitizer!). We used lavender, sweet orange, and geranium to create different hand sanitizers.
Lavender is widely known as a calming ingredient, but you may not have known that it is an antibacterial that helps in building your immune system. Geranium is great for your skin because it stimulates blood circulation, which is why I also use it when making my homemade deodorant. I decided to also use sweet orange essential oil because I love citrus scents, and orange oil is a wonderful disinfectant. These are just a few of my favorite essential oils, but you can add any that you prefer to your homemade hand sanitizer!
Once you make your hand sanitizer spray, you can use our printable labels to stick onto your bottles. Download the PDF below and edit the “lavender scented” text with the free font Aleo Italic. Print them onto full sheet label paper and trim each label individually. For more DIY beauty products, check out my recipes for whipped body butter, almond body scrub, or lavender bath salt.
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup of isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher)
- 1/3 cup of 100% pure aloe vera gel
- 10 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)
- 5–10 drops of Vitamin E oil (optional)
Instructions
Because our original hand sanitizer recipe used filtered water, we poured the mixture into 2 oz. spray bottles. Since removing the filtered water from the recipe, your mixture may have more of a gel consistency, which may work better in pump bottles.
Mix alcohol and aloe vera gel into a cup with a spout and pour the mixture into your bottle. Add your preferred essential oil and Vitamin E oil (optional). Shake well before each use.

Tips
The key for an effective homemade hand sanitizer is to use a two-to-one ratio of 91% isopropyl alcohol to aloe vera gel. You can change the amounts listed in the ingredients above as long as it is two parts alcohol and one part gel. Also, remember that hand sanitizer should not be a replacement for handwashing, and it is only effective if you spray your hands thoroughly and let them dry completely. You can read more about what the CDC recommends here.

Hand sanitizer with aloe vera is best for the skin as well.
Thanks!
Can I use Witch Hazel as a substitute for the Alcohol? Unfortunately where I live has completely run out of rubbing alcohol.
Hi Steph,
Witch Hazel is not a disinfectant and will not have the same sanitizing effects as using alcohol would.
I have tried making this a few times now and it keeps separating and getting these gummy balls in it from the aloe gel….what is causing this to happen? is there a source for pure aloe gel or juice with no added ingredients?
Hi Christi,
You must use 100% pure aloe gel to avoid separation. They should carry it at your local drug store, amazon also has some 100% aloe available.
Nice bottle and label on the photos! A must try homemade recipe!
Lia, you have done a fine job with this article. There is a lot of misinformation currently and you have pretty much nailed the basic logic of DIY Sanitizer. I have a few hints as well.
The W.H.O. has published an official DIY procedure at https://www.who.int/gpsc/5may/Guide_to_Local_Production.pdf .
In addition, for people that have trouble mixing the aloe gel, try adding the IPA or ethanol a little at a time and mixing completely before adding more, as most commercial aloe gels contain other things besides pure aloe which makes clumping problematic. Using glycerin instead of aloe will prevent this clumping. Aloe directly from plants will not clump up if you happen to have some in your garden.
Another tip if your shops don’t have isopropyl alcohol, you can purchase 190 Everclear at booze stores (95% ethanol).
Best of luck to all.
i made it with 99% isopropyl alcohol and Aloe Vera gel and vitamin e oil. but mine just seperated and the aloe vera gep just floats in there like a bottom ball? what did i do wrong?
Hi Hinaz,
We are not sure what you could have done wrong if you followed our directions correctly.
I made the sanitizer using 91% rubbing alcohol, aloe vera gel and eos. It is very liquid – the aloe vera gel didn’t seem to dissolve. it was in the bottom of the measuring cup I used to mix. What should I do? Is it still effetive?
Hi Mel,
Your hand sanitizer is still effective, the aloe is for helping with moisturizing. Try placing the mixture in a container where you can shake it to help the aloe mix in better.
I wonder if I can use any other ingredients in the same ratio 2 part alcohol and 1 part of the rest of ingredients. I’m thinking about making it with Thayers witch hazel (original formula with Aloe Vera & alcohol) and Nutiva MCT oil(edible) instead of Aloe Vera Gel. I’d like to make a spray not gel like sanitizer. Do you think this will work?
Hi June,
We cannot say if this will work as we have not tried it, taking out the alcohol will only make the sanitizer ani bacterial not anti viral. We are currently working on a new recipe that will be a spray and will be posting soon!
Thanks for this info. My Aloe Vera gel expired and I do not have vitamin E. Can I use fractionated coconut oil? If not, what do you suggest?
Hi Ronnie,
You can use fractionated coconut oil as it is anti bacterial. We are unsure what the consistency will be as we have not tried this in our recipe.
I used Everclear and I believe the Vitamin E makes clumps of slime.
Is there any reason I could not use almond oil instead of Vit E? (I just happen to have almond vs having to buy vit e.) Thanks.
Carmen,
We have not tried using Almond oil but see no reason why t wouldn’t work!
Can I use flower water instead of filtered water? Thanks.
Candy,
Yes you could use a floral water 🙂
what is filtered water?
Hi Carrie,
Use bottled water or water that has been filtered through something comparable to a Brita filter for this recipe, not tap water.
What can I use instead of aloe vera?
Hi Sammy,
We do not have an alternative for the aloe, but you can remove it from the recipe if you like and substitute with more water.
Hello, great content!. May i know what’s the % of the Ethyl concentration that is use for the hand sanitizer mixture?
Thank you..
Hi Bee,
You can use a %70 ethyl alcohol like what you would find in the drug store for first aid.

Can i omit vitamin E oil? how long can it last without it?
Thank you
Hi Jas,
You need the vitamin E oil to help dilute the essential oils added.
Did you use pure essential oils in creating your sanitizer? I found out you would probably have to add a base oil or carrier oil before using, or to dilute the essential oils first. I am pretty new at this, and I am just trying to take precautions.
Hi Anon,
We used vitamin E oil which helps to dilute the essential oils. 🙂
Hi can you use skin safe fragance oils?? Instead of essential oils
Hi Ruth! We haven’t tried it but I’m sure it would work– the oils are simply for smell, not to help with the sanitizing process.
Hi is this supposed to be kept in the refrigerator? Cuz i prefer my sanitizer to be in my bag all the time!!
I keep mine in my bag.
Will this work in a squirt bottle instead of a spray bottle??
Hi Heather! The consistency should be thin enough to use a squirt bottle.
Hi! Are the listed measurments above per 2oz bottle? If not, how many 2oz bottles is this recipe for?
Yes, this will fill one 2oz bottle. You could stretch it to 2 bottles if you didn’t want it as potent.
how much filtered water?
Just enough to fill the bottle 🙂
does brita filtered water pass for “filtered water”?
Yes!
Hello! Do we need to add preservatives to make it last longer?
Hi! Vitamin E oil is somewhat of a preservative– it contains natural antioxidants which extend the shelf life of the sanitizer. We recommend using natural, homemade projects within a few weeks to be safe.
essential oils: you can replace sweet orange by essential lemon oil or tea tree.
Great suggestions! I love lemon oil.
