We just love the sweet, little petals and big fluffy centers of this crepe paper zinnia — they are just so cheery looking! Zinnias bloom from mid-summer until frost, so this is a perfect flower to make right now. And of course making it out of crepe paper means you can enjoy it long after the first frost.
Crafting tip: Our tutorial below shows how you can thicken the wire with floral tape, but another option is to use a thick stem wire instead.
How to Make a Crepe Paper Zinnia
- Gather your craft tools and materials. Then download the flower pattern below.
- Cut the crepe paper according to template notes using scissors or a cutting machine.
- Shade the pinked edge on half of one red crepe paper piece with brown pastel; shade the pinked edge of two of the vanilla crepe with orange and the remaining three with pink pastel .
- Fringe the pinked edge of all stamen pieces with the detail scissors and curl them with the curling tool; then use your fingers to cup each petal.

Lia, can we get another crepe Zinnia? Bigger size possibly? Their a great flower On their own or in a mixed bouquet!😍
Hi Elizabeth,
We will add this to our project list, in the meantime you can always make the pattern larger before printing or in cricut design space before cutting to make a slightly larger flower.
Hi Lia, I made the Zinnia yesterday and I was wondering if you have a pdf file for the leaves ’cause I would like to make a bouquet of these beautiful flowers..
Hi Arline,
We used leaves from other crepe paper flowers for this arrangement. Check out these posts to fine them! https://liagriffith.com/crepe-paper-daisy-video/ https://liagriffith.com/crepe-paper-mum-for-fall/ https://liagriffith.com/crepe-paper-japanese-anemones/
Thank you so much Lia!🌹
I often switch between the SVG file for my Maker and using the PDF for hand cutting. I noticed a size discrepancy between the files for the zinnia, even after double checking my printer settings. I know I can make them in any size I wish, but what size was originally intended? Thank you!
Hi Leslie! I just checked both the PDF and SVG, and they are the same size. We’ve been having trouble with our designs uploading into Design Space at a much smaller scale the last couple weeks (we’re hoping it’s fixed SOON!) It’s possible that’s what is happening to you. The petals should be about .75″ wide and 2″ tall.
I am in the middle of making these lovelies…2 quick questions: 1) Did you use a pan pastel around the edges of each petal? 2) What leaf template was used for the zinnias?
Thank you!
Thanks for bringing this to our attention! We have updated the instructions to include the note about the PanPastels on the petals, and added the leaf SVG 🙂
Hi Lia! Would a regular stick pastel work instead of pan pastels? Thanks!
We haven’t tried it but it may work!
I’ve finally gotten around to attempting this flower but am already running into issues : ( I don’t understand how you are getting the stamens to taper so well around the base. I tried to wrap them as tightly as possible around the base part but they still just look bulky (even my first one), and I just scrapped it and decided I need to start over because I know the finished product wouldn’t look right. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be doing differently.
Hi DeeAnne,
Be sure to use tacky glue or a thin white glue when wrapping the stamen around the wire, once the stamen is wrapped completely you can pinch the base of the stamen in to compress it a bit.
Hi,
I was using tacky glue and tried pinching it but that didn’t help.
Could you send a photo of the base of your flower to hello@liagriffith.com 🙂
Can you use regular or carstick paper for this flower??
Hi! You could certainly try it with text weight paper but I’m not sure it will hold up with all that fringing.
I’m really having a hard time finding the color crepe for this one. I only have the first two of your papers and they are mixed up and I don’t know the colors i have. I just saw going to cut them out. I need help ! Lol
Do you have a chart of something like that that shows the color and the names of the paper ? I’ve looked everywhere and seemed that I’m lost , Help !
Hi Debra! I feel your pain. We have so many colors now, I lose track of which is which. 😉 I actually added three spreads in our new Crepe Paper Flowers book showing a chart of all of the colors in the three different crepe paper styles. The book is on Amazon and starts to ship August 7. Or you can get the eBook now.
Oh wow ! Well I have to buy your book then ! Thank you !
Lia , I got your e-book and yes the chart is wonderful now I know my colors that are all mixed together !
Also , the crepe paper flowers in the book , well I can’t do Zip. Files on my computer. I can do the ones on here. The Pdf . There are a couple in the book I want to do. Will the book flowers be on here soon ?? I need to make them !
Debra, you should be able to extract the SVG files from the Zipped folder that downloads– have you seen this tutorial on our site for that? https://liagriffith.com/how-to-use-svg-files-for-cricut/
